In honor of Ivan

A Beautiful Tribute to BT Owners from a wonderful NEBTR volunteer.....

I've seen a lot of sad news here lately- members with sick bostons, lost bostons and even bostons who are no longer with us. I just wanted to take a minute and let you know that I am thinking of you.

We lost our boston almost a year ago, and I still cry every single day. I miss him more than I can say. He was a huge personality. He could be so, SO naughty... but he was perfect. He would nip... but then come running back to "say" he was sorry. He would tease his brother, then come over for a kiss. He would tear up his toys one second, then be curled up for a snuggle the next minute.

He wasn't always good, but he was perfect. I wish I could say I was too. But I skipped walks when I was too cold. I was late getting home from work sometimes. I got frustrated. I yelled. But even still, he loved me more than anything. I wouldn't trade a minute of his sometimes crazy life for a million dollars, and I would cut off my left arm if I could have him back.

But I digress!!

YOU are all awesome. You dedicate so much of your time, your energy, your love and your money to these babies who have, in many cases, lived lives where they received very little of that. You give so tirelessly and freely of yourself and it is truly amazing. No matter how much you try... not every story will have a happy ending... but the fact that you all probably realize that and just keep doing it anyway? It just makes it even more inspiring.

It's still hard to even look at another boston, and even though Ivan hated most other dogs- I think he would approve of me wanting to give a little bit to try and better the life of another little bostie (though he might not admit it out loud). And it provides me a little glimmer of happiness in an otherwise heartbreaking year.

So for all of you managing heartache of your own- thank you. Thank you for giving so much of yourself and loving these kids so much that it hurts when something goes wrong. That you for making space in your homes, taking road trips to get to a boston in need, for spending time and money on vet bills and food, and ESPECIALLY for making space in your hearts for them. They need you and you are amazing. Your work is recognized, wonderful and so appreciated. Good karma points to you all!

The picture I attached is one of Ivan on his last birthday (the big 1-0). It make me smile, even when I am crying... and I hope it makes you smile too.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. It has a big boston shaped hole in it right now.... but that just means he was special, and that I was lucky to be his momma for the 10 years I had him

You are all wonderful.... sorry if I am mushy-gushy.... but I really am touched!

Thank you for the eloquent words, Jess, and Ivan was some special boy.

Traveling By Car With Your BT

Dog Travel Tips for Your Boston Terrier

Should your dog travel with you? While some Bostons love traveling with their humans, some have issues such as carsickness, or are just plain fearful of riding in the car. Here are some tips to make trips with your dog more enjoyable.

Local Trips:

Take your Boston on short, fun rides with you as early as possible. This will help him get used to traveling in the car and make your future rides more comfortable. If the only time your dog travels is when he gets shots at the vet, he probably won't want to get in the car!
Some dogs get carsick more easily than others. If this is a problem for your Boston, plan his feeding so that he has an empty stomach for your trips. If carsickness is a problem, there are over-the-counter medications for motion sickness available, or your veterinarian can prescribe a medication to help.
Give your BT a chance to relieve himself before getting in the car. Be sure to take along a leash, bag, paper towels and a bath towel for any clean-ups that might be needed. The safest place for your Boston while in the car is in a crate, although some dogs become carsick in close quarters. Another option is a car harness or tether attached to your dog's harness or collar.
Some dog travel considerations for the car:
  • Don't leave your Boston loose in the car with a leash on - he could hang himself.

  • Don't let him put his head out an open window. Debris can easily get into his eyes. Because Boston Terriers' eyes are so prominent, they are especially susceptible to damaging air pressure and debris!

  • Don't leave your Boston unattended in the car in extremely hot or cold weather. Temperatures can reach over 100 degrees in a matter of minutes.

Road Trips:

Before you take your BT on a road trip with you, give some consideration to whether it's best for him to travel with you or to board him. Will there be a point where you have to leave him in the car (to go into a restaurant or other facility he where he can't go)? If so, how will you ensure he is secure and has adequate ventilation?
What will you do if your Boston becomes ill or hurt during the trip or if he becomes exposed to fleas or ticks? Will your motel/hotel accept pets? Call ahead to confirm. A pet deposit may be required.
If you decide to take your Boston on the road with you, here are some things you'll want to pack:
  • Flea spray - some areas of the country are heavily infested with fleas, and you may find them at your accommodations.

  • Waste bags for cleaning up his messes.

  • Depending on where you're going, you may need to take an updated health certificate (available from your veterinarian).

  • Take your Boston's medical information (just in case). Include the name, address and phone number for your veterinarian, rabies certificate, vaccination record, and make note of any medication he is taking. You'll also want to pack a small first aid kit.

Boston Terrier Mix

Is a Boston Terrier Mix the Right Dog for You?

A Boston Terrier mix is created by crossing a purebred Boston Terrier with another purebred dog. The mix is what is sometimes referred to as a "designer dog" or "hybrid dog".
These dogs are not the usual "mutts" whose backgrounds are unknown. A hybrid dog is a combination of two purebred dogs with known lineage. Hybrid dogs are becoming more and more popular. They are usually are bred to produce a new dog that will ideally have the best characteristics of both parent breeds. Unfortunately, any variation of qualities from either breed may apprear in the hybrid dog.
If you are considering a hybrid dog, research the characteristics for both breeds to be sure there's nothing in either parent breed that would make them an undesirable pet for you.
The American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC), the main registry for hybrid dogs, currently recognizes over 500 designer breed crosses, including the Boston Terrier Mixes listed below.
