In Memory of Herschel

Herschel (Hercules) took his final journey this morning.  I had hoped to have Herschel with me for a few more months, but the disease progressed so rapidly that he could no longer stand, eat, or control his bowel movements and began to moan in pain.  He died peacefully in my arms, with my vet assisting him.

Herschel was the most gentle, sweet dog I have ever met, he did not get the love and care he needed and deserved, but at least he had a few happy months with Abigail and me, thanks to the caring members of NEBTR.  Thank you for sending him to me and letting him have a few months of happiness and the ability to die easily, knowing he was loved.

Sometimes you choose the dog, but Herschel chose me and I am grateful for his love.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Herschel.  I'm sure he never felt more loved and cared for than the time he had with you.  Thank you for being there for him.

RIP sweet boy. - Leslie

I am crying with you.
Thank you for caring for Herschel with such open and loving arms. I know it was not easy.
You were the best thing that ever happened to him!
Maxy will take care of him I promise. - Jerrilyn

Oh.....my heart breaks ...so sad for this situation but I hope you know what an angel you are ... He left knowing the touch of a soft hand and the warmth of your heart, God Bless
Jennifer

I am so very sorry for your loss.  These pups come into our lives and touch us in a way that only an animal lover knows.  I think we are the ones who are truly blessed because they love us unconditionally despite what they have been through, some much worse than others.  Thank you for loving him and taking care of him and know that those are the last memories he had and took with him.  Bless your heart Hercules! - Linda V

Hercules Showing Off

Aren't I handsome!  My foster mom bought me some new sweaters, I'm modeling one of them for you.  Mom says I don't have much hair so need the extra warmth, plus it helps protect my delicate skin from the occasional scratch or itch.  Personally, I just want to look fashionable, but it makes Abigail jealous 'cause Mom doesn't buy her nice clothes, Abigail gets the natural look 'cept when it's cold outside.

So long for now, time to rest.

Mackster Goes Visiting

Former foster Mackster is visiting me for a few days while his family, the Bremigens, are on a quick trip to PA.  Here's a picture of him with my two resident canines, forever Abigail, the fiery redhead, foster Hercules/Herschel, the handsome guy in the middle, and charming Mackster in my usual place.  They're resting after a busy day of renewing old friendships and making new ones.  It's going to be crowded in bed tonight, with lots of snoring and a few gas attacks.

Hercules Barks a Big Thanks

Hercules/Herschel was so surprised and delighted to find out this morning that he is the recipient of NEBTR's generosity from the extra donations that foster Zoey generated.  He also hopes that Zoey is recovering quickly from her C-section so she can enjoy a happy retirement in a loving home.
He's not allowed to beg at table, but it is the only way to get a somewhat decent picture: he's camera shy.

A Note From Hercules

I had an eventful morning today, more tests at the vet.  Worst part, I didn't get to eat breakfast until I returned home late this morning!  But I did get to say hello to my friends at the office.  Mom says we'll have the results in a few days.

Meanwhile, more pills, at least Mom hides them in pumpkin or a piece of cheese, which means more snacks for me; my bratty foster sister gets to watch while I eat, Mom protects me, otherwise Abigail will steal them.  Don't care if she gets the pills, just so long as I get the food...  I do have priorities!
My skin is looking and feeling a lot better, the infections are starting to heal, though Dr Snyder prescribed more antibiotics cause it's not perfect yet.

Life is good here, I've met the neighbors, they're really nice to me.  Everyone wants to say hello, they tell me what a nice boy I am, check on my health, and give me gentle pets: I just love the attention.  One problem, though, Mom won't let me have the center of the bed cause I like to sprawl.  She says it's sweet that I like to cuddle, but it defeats the purpose if there's no room for her to get in the bed.
I received another gift today, a houndstooth sweater, but I don't know who sent it cause it didn't include a gift card.  Thank you so much for thinking of me.

Goodbye for now, I'll write again when I get my test results,
Hercules/Herschel

Hercules, or as I prefer Herschel, received his test results very quickly, his current dose of Vetoryl is accurate and values have returned to normal.  he will need a third series of tests in October, normal protocol when beginning treatment for Cushing's, and will need additional testing periodically throughout the remainder of his life.
