Myrtle is Home

Myrtle is home and doing wonderful!!!! The vet says she has had the biggest pressure improvement that he has ever seen in all of these types of surgeries (balloonplasty) so he is thrilled with how she did. She will have a check up in about 2  months, but her prognosis is very good.  Thank you to everyone who contributed to her surgery and helped her to get to this point-it has been a long time coming and she now has a shot at a long life :)

Update on Myrtle's Surgery Yesterday

Myrtle had balloon plasty (like angioplasty) to open up a valve in her heart that didn't form right. Her right ventricle is enlarged 3 times it's normal size because it has to work so much harder to push the blood through and she also has blood leakage in her heart. I know she is in good hands with Dr. Goodwin, her cardiologist.

He called and said Myrtle is out of surgery and doing well.  He can already see an improvement in her condition and will do an EKG (ultrasound) tomorrow and he will be able to get a better idea of actual numbers and pressures, but he very optimistic that we will see a big change and now she has a good shot at a long life. Will update more after we pick her up tomorrow and bring her home....

Update on Myrtle

It has been awhile since I have written an update on Myrtle, but she is progressing slowly. Her hair is about 80% back, but she is still itchy-we have another dermatologist appointment in 2 weeks to see if we should adjust her meds (apoquel), although she will most likely need to be on meds for the rest of her life. We also have an appointment this week with the cardiologist to see when we will be able to have her heart surgery done to repair the valve that is not opening all the way.  She has gained weight, has a great appetite, has great energy and actually engages the other dogs in play and everyone who meets her loves her.  We had a party this weekend and she was the hit of the party....pics attached!  Will update more after her vet appts....

Update on Myrtle

We took Myrtle to the dermatologist about 2 weeks ago and he prescribed Apoquel, of course I was skeptical as nothing else has worked for her skin condition and hair loss, but I am happy to say we have seen a HUGE improvement!!!!  Her itching is about 95% better and she seems to have more energy, although we have only seen a little hair growth on her face.   I am so happy she is feeling better and not scratching herself raw, I really didn't know what else to do for her and she was so uncomfortable.   I am not a fan of pumping dogs full of meds and tried the holistic approach to this, but the infection she has is really stubborn and the homeopathics were just not helping her skin.  We will post more as her condition approves!!!

Myrtle Goes to the Vet

So I have had Myrtle in my care since May and her itchy skin and hair loss has not improved much in the past few months-her other ailments (anemia, elevated WBC count, hematoma on her ear) have all improved though. 

We went to see a specialist today for her skin and he thinks that because she has had this going on for so long (2 plus years according to her paperwork) it is just a very stubborn infection and the treatments we were doing for her were just scratching the surface.  He prescribed Apoquel (which from what I understand is fairly hard to get due to a shortage, so I feel fortunate), and hopefully we should see results within a few days. 

Time is a bit of the essence as she needs a life saving heart surgery too, but the cardiologist won't perform surgery until she is better as he thinks it could compromise her health.  This poor little girl is only 5, but seems like she has been through hell, so keeping fingers crossed that this Apoquel works!!!

Update on Myrtle's Condition

Hi all, wanted to give an update on Miss Myrtle and her list of ailments and also address a heart condition.  She is still really itchy although has had some hair growth and her face looks "brighter". We have been bathing her every other day and slathering her with coconut oil-wasn't really helping much.  Just switched to Bag Balm and it seems to help for short term relief thankfully.  She has gained a little weight, but still really thin-we have to be careful what we feed her due the the yeast-yeast feeds off of sugars.  She also has what is called Pulmonic Stenosis-meaning one valve in her heart didn't form properly and isn't opening all the way-it has caused her right ventricle to enlarge to 3 times it's normal size-they can do surgery, but want to wait until her skin issues and associate anemia are cleared up as is not urgent.  This little girl has a long road ahead of her before she is healthy and can be adopted .  Having said all that, she is as sweet as pie, loves to snuggle and is so tolerant of all the baths and lotion applications that I put her through-I can't wait to see her healthy and feeling better!

Myrtle Update

Hi all, wanted to give a quick update on little Myrtle-who was turned into a shelter when her sick owner could not care for her anymore.  We were at the vet last week and we are trying to figure out her skin issues-she is on a raw rabbit diet to see if that helps at all.  She also has a hematoma on her ear, severe luxating patellas, a yeast infection, elevated white blood cell count, anemia, and an enlarged heart with murmur.  We have a cardiologist appt later today to see what we need to do about her heart.  She is such a sweet loving little girl who just wants to be curled up in my lap all day.  She gets along great with my other 3 dogs and at times is even playful with them.  She is unsure what to think of the yard, so I wonder if she has never seen grass before-or maybe it just irritates her itchy skin. Here are some pictures of her and I will update after the appt tonight....

Update on Myrtle

Hey all, Myrtle is doing pretty well-I was waiting till after her cardiologist appt. this upcoming tues to update everyone.  She has a lot going on though-skin issues, ear infections, luxating patellas, super high white blood cell count, yeast infection on her body and an enlarged heart with murmur. Ugh. We will see what they say tues about her heart issues.  She is the absolute sweetest dog though, as loving as can be and as itchy as she is, wants to be pet and up in my lap.  She walks very bow legged due to the luxating patellas and perhaps an ACL injury in both legs, my vet didn't think it necessary to address the leg issues right now with everything else she has going on. She is on a raw frozen rabbit diet that she seems to love, but still pretty skinny and somewhat weak in her back end.  I will post some more pics and an update next week!

Myrtle in Her Temporary Home

 

I went today to pull Myrtle from the Burlington County Animal Shelter, and what a sad sight she is!  This poor little girl is missing most of her fur, has scabs all over and both ears are severely infected and she scratches non stop-but besides all of this, she is as sweet as pie!  I took her outside when we got home, and all she wanted to do was being in my lap, and she stares right into your eyes-she really wants to be loved.  Apparently she was surrendered by her owner who had stage 4 cancer and was just unable to care for this poor, sweet thing.

She will be with me through the weekend, and then Chris Cassner will be taking care of her and nursing her back to health.  Here are a few pics of sweet Myrtle-notice my BT's behind the gate wanting to play with her!

New Foster Myrtle

We would like you to meet our newest foster girl, sweet little Myrtle. She is only 5 years old and was surrendered to an animal shelter. She obviously has lots of problems that need to be addressed. Her owner did not neglect her but sadly they had a terminal illness and was no longer to help fight for this little girl…so we need your help to fight for her! Not only is she physically suffering but she is now adjusting to a new environment and away from the only home she’s known.
The shelter contacted Northeast Boston Terrier Rescue because they had hoped we would be able to quickly get her into a quiet foster home that would be able to immediately work on her health issues. She also needed a calm and loving environment to help her battered body begin to heal. Obviously she is in very bad shape and needs some MAJOR care to bring her body to match the beauty of her soul. So far it has been determined she has severe allergies and high grade heart murmur but we are sure that is just the beginning of the medical list.
We have a phenomenal foster home where Myrtle will receive all the care, love and support she will need to begin the fight for her life. Now we need your help to make sure this little girl can receive the medical treatment she needs and deserves. She is in the best hands and if we can save this girl, we’ll do whatever it takes.
