Sunday was one of those mornings that those of us with multiple dogs asks WHY? Why do we have these dogs. Saturday night one of our GSDs had us up and down all night with stomach issues; you can use your imagination.
When I woke at 7 am I put a dog out and said oh Sheet we did not get the boy out as many times as needed. Wanna see a man get to work on time - Mark was outta the house with 2 dogs in 5 minutes flat.....and I began cleaning carpets, floors everything. I was on a roll. Even decided to clean the oven which is really a button on the stove but figured what the hell.
It was then time for me to shower. While in the shower I heard Vinchenzo, our forever foster, barking. He is not a barker, only to go to work or get Oscar moving, none of which was happening. I ignored him for 5 more minutes; he was relentless. I was in the shower saying to myself, "I cannot get one second of peace" all the while Vinchenzo was running around like chicken little. I opened the door to a wall of smoke.
YES I had left a butcher block with our knives in it on the stove and it was ablaze big flames - a real fire. Here I am in a towel, wet and making my way to the kitchen, which was glowing with a red hue.
I really did not want to call the fire department and was able to get the block in the sink and get the fire out. My eyes were burning the house was filled with toxic smoke; that wood must have been treated.
So Vinchenzo saved the day and a lot more. Sadly, my dog Oscar and foster Baxter never moved off their pillows. Only when I opened the windows did the smoke detectors go off upstairs; the ones downstairs must be dead.
Lessons Learned - Always have multiple BTS. Never clean the oven and most important CHANGE THE BATTERIES in your smoke detectors.
And Vin got a new bed today at Home Goods!

Man Saved by Dog Who Says Grace
Remember Djaingo, the "grace" saying dog whose video has been making the rounds? Well, Djaingo's story just got much deeper. I think you will be amazed. The link is below.

You Had Me at Woof

Congratulations to NEBTR member Julie Klam, on the success of her recently published book "You Had Me at Woof." This is a funny and heartfelt recount of Julie’s experiences adopting and fostering Boston Terriers in New York for the NEBTR. In the November 1 issue of People (on-stands now), Julie received a stellar lead review. The review says: “Without being preachy, each chapter is a lesson in what dogs teach us – about ourselves, but also about community, patience, friendship, and, yes, love.”
NEBRT President Sheryl Trent notes, "Folks, if you buy nothing else for a Holiday present for yourself and friends, you have to buy this extraordinary book, "You Had Me at Woof" by Julie Klam, our own volunteer with NEBTR. This is Julie's second book. Her first "Please Excuse My Daughter" was a riot. She relates her own personal stories of fostering with us, the tragedies and the joys. If you saw the video clip of Julie with her 3 dogs, then you will love to hear the story of how 2 of them became her very own through her fostering with NEBTR. I read this beautiful book on a flight to CA a few months ago (I was privileged to be given a pre-release by Julie). I know it's a cliche, but I laughed and I cried (actually sobbed during one very painful chapter).
I will treasure this book forever. So will you. NEBTR is featured so much throughout so, not only is it a source of pride for us, but will help all of us understand, or relate, to how it can impact you and your family when you volunteer to help rescued animals. This is a huge "Thumbs Up" for Julie and her wonderful book. "
The book was also reviewed and given a glowing review by the New York Times. You can read their review here.
Julie comments, "I'm hoping to bring a huge amount of attention to rescue and NEBTR and all the amazing work we do! You are all so wonderful and my overwhelming admiration for all you do was the inspiration for the book. I am blown away by what everyone does for the pups and the support given to other members. You are all my heroes."
Readers of this blog might also remember the story of Julie's experiences fostering senior Boston Terrier Dahlia, who is also featured in the new book.
Way to go Julie!

Deegan the BT Star
A world famous Boston Terrier is Deegan, whose mom posts on the BT bulletin board at woofboard, com.
Deegan was in "Hotel For Dogs" as Georgia. There were actually 3 Bostons who rotated the role in the film. As Deegan's mom tells it, "Nip/Tuck were 2 rescue girls from Florida. They are very timid and would do hardly anything. The did the tech stuff like going and sitting on their mark and holding things in their mouth. Deegan did all the action. The feeding scenes, the bone flying thru the air and running (his favorite part and mine too) the walking scene the dog catcher scene and a whole lot more. I was contracted to go to Dream Works and bring a Boston to represent Boston Terriers when they were picking the breed to play the part. We were there with quite a few other breeds vying for it. Baby my Boston that I took with me won over the big wigs hands down with her Boston antics and that is how the Boston Terrier was picked for the part and Deegan played it, along with Nip/Tuck."
Deegan was called "Nubbins" by his trainers because he always wags his little nubbin tail.
Deegan was also in the Jennifer Lopez movie "the Back-Up Plan" as the wheelchair-bound pup.

Update on Popeye
Remember Popeye, the pup who was rescued from New York state in the middle of a terrible snowstorm?
Well, here he is now! He was fostered by Carolyn of Kamp Kanine, and adopted by the Shulman family. Doesn't he look great!

Update on Magoo
For those of you who remember Magoo, the 10ish something dog who was in foster care with us for a very long time and then finally adopted to my neighbor's mother along with Trigger, a younger one of ours, about 2 years ago. Pat just emailed me and said Magoo, Trigger and her other dog Polly are all doing just great. She said Magoo is playing more with the other 2 dogs than he did when he first came to her, and that he loves his meals and has an internal timepiece that allows him to remind her when it's time to eat!

I Am an Animal Rescuer
I AM AN ANIMAL RESCUER
by Casey Carter Tyree
I will never bring about world peace. I will not save the rain forest.
I'm not a brain surgeon and I'll never transplant an organ to save a life.
I don't have the ear of a powerful politician or world power.
I can't end world hunger.
I'm not a celebrity, and God knows I'm not glamorous!
I'm not looked up to by millions around the world. Very few people even recognize my name.
I'll never win the Nobel prize.
I'll never save the rain forest or end global warming.
There are a lot of things that I'll never do or become.
But today I placed a dog!
It was a small, scared, bundle of flesh and bones that was dropped off in a shelter by unfeeling people that didn't care what happened to it, but yet who were responsible for it even having existence in the first place.
I found it a home.
It now has contentment and an abundance of love. A warm place to sleep and plenty to eat. A child has a warm fuzzy new friend who will give them unquestioning devotion and teach them about responsibility and love.
A wife and mother has a new spirit to nurture and care for. A husband and a father has a companion to sit at his feet at the end of a hard day of work and help him relax and enjoy life. And a sense of security, that when he is gone all day at work, that there is a protector and a guardian in his home to keep watch over his family.
No, I'm not a rocket scientist but today I saved one of God's precious creatures. Today, I made a difference!
I Am An Animal Rescuer
My job is to assist God's creatures
I was born with the need to fulfill their needs
I take in new family members without plan, thought or selection
I have bought dog food with my last dime
I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand
I have hugged someone vicious and afraid
I have fallen in love a thousand times and I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body
I have Animal Friends and friends who have Animal Friends
I don't often use the word "pet"
I notice those lost at the road side
And my heart aches
I will hand raise a field mouse
And make friends with a vulture
I know of no creature unworthy of my time
I want to live forever if there aren't animals in Heaven
But I believe there are!
Why would God make something so perfect and leave it behind?
We may be master of the animals,
But the animals have mastered themselves
Something people still haven't learned
War and abuse make me hurt for the world
But a rescue that makes the news gives me hope for humankind
We are a quiet but determined army
And making a difference every day
There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan
Nothing more rewarding than saving a life
No higher recognition than watching them thrive
There is no greater joy than seeing a baby play
who only days ago, was too weak to eat
I am an Animal Rescuer
My work is never done
My home is never quiet
My wallet is always empty
But my heart is always full
In the game of life, I have already won!

Update on Belle, Joan's Foster
Hi everyone! I have not given you an update on my permanent foster, Belle. If you remember she is the 14 year old nearly blind girl abandoned in PA back in Jan. She is doing very well and fits right in with the rest of the gang. Her hair has grown back nicely except I think her little tail will always be bald. She has gained weight and is a whopping 14 1/2 pounds now. She has quickly learned to mooch with the rest of them at dinnertime and runs to greet me when I come home from work. She has really bonded with my husband though and wants to sit with him and have him rub her back for hours. She has turned into a feisty little old lady and I love her dearly already. I am attaching some pictures of her dressed as Spiderman for a costume contest we entered at a fundraiser for the local Humane Society. Thee is a picture of me with her and one of the whole gang. They were my little super heroes.

Walking Your Dog
http://blogs.dogster.com/dog-training/whos-walk-is-it-anyway/2010/08/
Read this great article from Dogster.Com
When trainer Casey Lomonaco is out walking her dogs, she often sees fellow dog walkers doing things that make her cringe - mainly, dogs being yanked around on leashes or getting yelled at for, well, being dogs. With our busy schedules, it's easy to head out with the plan of "walking x route in y amount of time" and getting frustrated when Fido isn't down with the agenda. But the next time you leash up your dog, ask yourself who the walk is really for.

Update on Tucker
Thought you might like to see more photos of Tucker in his forever home… he’s doing SO well!!
Tucker looks like he’s quite happy in his new home! I love the picture of him with his new sister at the window. Looks like his legs are doing really well! He had a little booboo on his paw in the last picture, hence the bandage… we certainly remember that little pouty face! I’m so happy for him – he scored the jackpot of homes!

Update on Bizzy
I went and visited Adam, Tasha and Bizzy this past weekend. Mizz Bizzy is doing wonderful!!!! She was happy as could be. I got the happy dance as soon as I arrived. She has calmed down with her obsession with tennis balls and fetch. She enjoys going to the pet store, going to the dog park, and going on walks. She is a favorite with the kids at the apartment complex too. Her knees are wonderful! She was running all over, up and down the steps.
Adam and Tasha love her and spoil her to death. She is also spoiled by her grandparents. Adam and Tasha are planning to come to the Wharton event so hopefully everyone will get to meet Bizzy!
She couldnt have found a better home!!!
