Update on Keanu

Keanu is living the good life with his foster mom Jojo Mu, who decided that he was such as special boy that he would stay with her forever. She says that she is absolutely in love with him, and you can understand why by looking at that face!

Update on Rocket

Hello everyone, I've posted 2 new photos of Rocket. I can't believe how much weight I've gotten on him in a week and a half...he's a different dog! He's the sweetest little guy. I'll have my vet check him this week to see if he needs vaccines (we don't know if he ever had any so we'll do titres) and go from there...then all he'll need is neutered and he'll be ready for a forever home!

The Story of Foster Buddy

NEBTR has many members who peruse the Internet, papers, and any other avenues of information looking for bostons that have either been surrendered by their owners, found as strays, or seized from otherwise deplorable living conditions. That is how we found Buddy.

Buddy was my first foster who was found in a shelter in Farmington, WV in January of this year. The shelter was running only able to keep enough heat in the kennels to keep the water from freezing, and even though they gave Buddy a nice bed and a blanket, he was quite honestly freezing. Bostons have very short coats, and chill very easily, and we knew we had to step in and help this lil' guy find his new forever home.

His journey started when I was asked to take him in and get all of his medical issues looked at by a vet, and to help him interact in a new family setting. I first picked Buddy up from his transport carrier in Zelienople PA; he was a stocky built, muscular boston that looked like Goliath compared to my own little boston who was ten pounds lighter than he was.

I anticipated that he might fuss on the ride home, He didn't make a peep. I thought he would be frightened of our other pets when we arrived  home. He loved them. I thought he would be lonely or sad the first  night in a strange place. He slept like a baby. So I thought I was going  down easy street. Well lets just say easy street had a couple pot holes.

We don't know how, but something happened to him prior to his  rescue that ended up with him having one of his toe nails de-gloved.  The nail was completely ripped off and the nail bed and nerves were  exposed and likely would have caused an infection. The vet was very  helpful by telling me that the only thing they could do was to sedate  him and put super glue over the injury to guard it. He said it would  be better for him not to have to go through the sedation and would  save our rescue some funds if I could try to do this myself. I thought  Buddy would have a fit because it was so sore, but my daughter held  him snuggled him, and talked softly to him while I just dripped a few drops where it needed to be. Buddy never flinched.

At Buddy's vet exam, they found that he had a slight heart murmur that was not something to be overly concerned about at the moment,  but we needed to know so that if he ever has an infection a vet ca administer antibiotics so that it didn't settle into the weakened part of  his heart. He also found that Buddy did not have good dental care and  had two abcessed teeth, and two small bumps on his left eye and one on his right, but they were not interferring with his vision. He was put on an antibiotic, and was scheduled for his neutering on Feb. 15th, where at the same time they removed his abcessed teeth.

We had Buddy as part of our family for two months, and he showed  me that every single worry I had about a fostering was unfounded. He was the perfect first foster. The only issue was that he had some food
aggression around other dogs, but I expected something like that because his owners who surrendered him told the shelter that he didn't want  to share his food with the rottweiler they had brought home, and that
was why they gave him up after 7 yrs. I can't even imagine that reasoning.

Well all good stories have a happy ending and so does Buddy's. He was adopted by a couple from Waynesboro PA on February 19th, and he is now enjoying a life where he has his humans all to himself, and
has nothing but a life filled with love and compassion. It was hard to see him go, and we do miss him, but he opened the door for us to know  that there are so many more dogs out there who need rescued, and
we are all to happy to answer the call.

We had Buddy for a couple of months, but it wouldn't have mattered if I had only had him for an hour; we love him as much as our own.  Needless to say, it did hurt to see him go, but I doled out lots of extra attention to my own Boston an Goldens, and kept reminding myself that there is another out there who needs me to do the same for him or her as I did for Buddy.

Willie Goes to His Forever Home

Willie he is a nine month old male Boston terrier. He is a typical puppy, full of energy and playfulness. He is sweet and loves his ears scratched. Because of his boundless puppy energy he neededn a family that will keep him busy.

Willie lived his first 6 months with a "breeder” who was going to put him down because he wasn't selling.  Luckily he was saved and released to a rescue. Our belief is he lived in a crate those first 6 months.

Fortunately, Elly Monfett offered to foster Willie and work with him on basic puppy training.   He has now gone to his forever family with Elizabeth Yan.  Don't they all look happy in the picture at the top of the page?

Nick and Vicki's Tribute to Miss Molly Moo

Molly came to NEBTR in Aug 2009 two weeks shy of her 11th birthday. She was diagnosed with Cushings and due to those medical complications we kept her as a permanent foster. She spent the next year and a half with us learning how to snuggle and be an important part of our family. She yodeled and danced like a little dancing queen when she wanted a cookie. She was a pleasure to sing with and she even filled in end of phrases for me! When we took in Ori, our 3-legged puppy mill mama, Molly taught her how to be a dog. Ori watched Molly's every step and action and it was Molly's confidence and ways that helped Ori to relax and "learn the ropes." Molly never gave up on being a part of our family. She loved to chew on bones, bully's and later zuke z ridges, always enjoying what was given to her. She traveled with us often and was a model doggy citizen loving time in nature and time with a pack of other dogs. We thought we were here to help her, but as usual, she helped us in more ways than we can ever express. Sweet dreams Miss Moo, we will always remember you and the love you faithfully gave to our little family...

We had a quick slide down and before we all knew it, we were saying goodbye to our beautiful Miss Moo.... We helped her cross on Friday evening...she was in my arms snuggled close to my heart and she went peacefully, released of her pain and confusion.

She came into our lives, reluctantly on our part on Aug 15, 2009.  We had a few beautiful months with her and Tink and then she helped us transition after Tink crossed the bridge.  She helped Ori learn all the things she needed to learn as a dog in our house beginning when Ori came to us in Jan '10.  And for just over a year we had "our girls" Ori and Molly.  Molly being top dog and reminding O from time to time.  Ori and Moo made a great pair.  Ori made a mess of whatever she was playing with and Molly ate the mess if we weren't fast enough.

We fell for Molly fast.  I used to tease Nick that she was Molly's boyfriend.  She was easy going and over the past year and a half learned to snuggle and love and be an important part of our little family.

And in a blink of an eye, our time with her is up.  She had a beautiful retirement with us.  We couldn't have asked for anything more, but of course we always want just a little more time.  Just one more pain free day....  Another beautiful golden girl left her paw prints forever on our hearts.  I wouldn't trade our time for anything.  She was another gem, another reminder of the good gifts we are given.

Miss Moo run fast and free, free of pain.  Give Tinker my love; let her know I think of her every day.  Teach her how to sing and always remember how much we love you.

We will have 2 roses in memory of our beautiful girls.... their legacys will live on in the work we will continue to do....

Molly Wigglesbottom: Born Aug 29, 1998.  Loved with us from Aug 15, 2009 to February 11, 2011 and beyond.  We will always remember you darling.

Update on Princess

Right after Christmas in 2009 a young lady contacted NEBTR asking if we could take her 2 Bostons. She and her mother (who had cancer) were being evicted from their home and she has been trying desperately to have friends or family to take her girls with no success.

After she was completely out of options we took them into foster care and their names were Princess (5 yrs) and Madison (6 yrs). Both girls were successfully adopted into wonderful homes and here is a one year update on Princess…

We have had Princess for a year now and while that time has been filled with ups and downs, we would not trade her for the world. She is a wonderfully sweet and loving dog. She loves to cuddle and curl up in a soft blanket. She has formed a very strong bond with our daughter and curls up in bed with her every night.

We did have to go to some private training sessions when Princess first arrived where we discovered that she has some resource guarding issues. Initially that was quite worrisome since she started several fights with our other Boston Sweetpea. But after the training sessions and with a lot of patience, persistence and love she is improving. The two of them can now lay on opposite ends of the couch with very little fussing. Princess still gets nervous and anxious that Sweetpea is going to take her toys or attention, but there is not a day that goes by that we ever regret bringing Princess into our home. She is just so sweet. And every week we see improvement in her relationship with Sweetpea.

When we first brought Princess home she was so underweight that we could see the bones in her spine and her ribs, and she had patches on her hind legs and tail where there was little or no fur. Now she is a very healthy 23lbs and her coat has filled in beautifully. She looks like a totally different dog! We've attached some pictures of her sleeping in her favorite spot on the couch. She loves to sleep there with her favorite toys tucked into the blanket with her. It is very funny to watch her burrow into the blankets and to listen to her contented groans when you rub her belly or scratch behind her ears. She also loves to be picked up and will nuzzle her head onto your neck and shoulders. We cannot thank you enough for helping to bring Princess into our family. We are looking forward to many wonderful, happy years ahead with her.

"Woof" Raffle

We are having a raffle. Last year we helped 93 Boston Terriers get Veterinary care and find forever homes. This year we will probably surpass that number. Having a raffle helps us continue helping all dogs that come our way. Sometimes we need your help.

3 New Fosters Are Transported, Given Spa Treatment

Kim and I picked up Buddy 6yrs., Sparkira 10 yrs. and Sasha 9 yrs. earlier today. All 3 of them have totally different personalities, but they really are sweet dogs!! They had much needed baths, pedis and manis which they tolerated really well!! Attached is a photo of the 3 of them on the ride home.

These three are now in their loving foster homes. Buddy is going to Julie in NYC, Sparkira to Linda on Long Island.

Chicken and Sweet Potato Stew Recipe

Here is my recipe;

6 large boneless chicken breast
1/4 cup chopped raw carrots
1/4 cup frozen peas
1 celery stalk chopped up small
1/2 cup uncooked brown rice ( you may also buy the steamed ready made )
1 tablespoon chopped parsley ( uncooked )
1 small yam or sweet potato ( with the skin ) ( chopped up in small
pieces )

Cook brown rice separate.
Cook chicken breasts until it comes to a boil and skim off any fat on
the top. Add in with the chicken, the carrots, peas, celery, sweet
potato & parsley and let it come to a boil again. When it comes to a
boil turn it on low and let it simmer for an hour.

When finished take a bowl and put in the rice, then take out the
chicken and chop up in small pieces or shred it ( if you have a
chopper it can come in handy here ) and mix it in to the rice evenly ,
you may add some broth that you cooked the chicken in to have it mix
easier ( I always add in about 1 cup of the broth but don't make it to
watery ). Then scoop out all the veggies in the pot and mix it in the
bowl. . I then portion it out into 8 plastic containers ( I used the
size that a can of dog food would be ( about 13 ounces each portion ).
I then refrigerate it because the food contains no salt. Each
container has 2 meals in it. This last my 2 BT's 4 days but you can
make a whole bunch and freeze it as well.

I use the leftover broth for soup stock or you can save it to put a
little on your dogs kibble to. Or once in a while I boil some noodles
and have soup myself LOL !! It's really good.

Once or twice a week I also make my bostons a couple of eggs in a pan
but their favorite is the wild alaskan sockeye salmon I make for them
once a week that I bake and then mix it with brown rice. Since I don't
do the doggie vitamins I make sure that they have kibble on the side
that they pick at throughout the day by merrick because it's organic
and has all the vitamins in there that the food I make might not have.

Banana Mash Dog Treats

I have another good recipe that I discovered when one of my rotties was in heart failure. She was on Lasix (a diuretic for excess fluids and for the heart failure). It's called my Banana Mash.

1 tbs. raw honey

1/2 cup low fat plain yogurt

1 cup greens (grinded in food processor)

1 package soft tofu (about 10 oz)
Bananas

Mash the bananas and tufu in a bowl (or in a blender at low speed).

Add the honey, yogurt and greens - mix well

This high protein and potassium recipe can be served for breakfast or a topping for those who use kibble dog food (spoon full).

At least you don't have to cook this one!!

Veggie Dog Treats

Two apples

Two carrots

Any green veggie you got festering in your fridge (kale cabbage spinach, etc)

10 oz. whole wheat flour

10 oz. rolled oats

4 eggs

 

Grind your apples and carrots and add any greens you want in the food processor.  Then add your whole wheat flour and rolled raw oats.  Add eggs to make a dough.&nbs p; Fill a mini muffin pan with the dough or spoon fill it on a baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

 

Then let them sit in the hot oven shut off until what I call they are hard as your head.  About 2 hrs.  LOL

 

They will harden and then will keep for two weeks in the fridge.

I have 7 dogs so I have to double and triple every recipe.  Yes, you can leave them in a treat jar for a week or so but remember you have no preservatives in these cookies.  They will keep in the fridge about 3 weeks so if you can't use them by then, you can freeze them.  As far as your dogs getting fat, well if you gave them 10 a day, maybe (lol) but really there are no fattening ingredients.  I use them for breakfast because my dogs eat their meat once a day for dinner.  If you give them any treat daily, and after a week you see expanding waist lines, you're over doing it. This is my winter recipe for dog cookies. May your dogs enjoy!

New Foster Willie

Willie has arrived safely thanks to Adam and Roxanne (after some delays from the owner) He is very sweet but I hear very active. He's still a little nervous so I'm sure it will be a day or 2 before he settles in. He is almost 9 months old.

Marilyn Saves Buster

I credit my failed foster Marilyn with saving my Buster. We had just decided to keep her. After the nightly play session with each other I noticed Buster covered in tiny bruises called pettechiae, which usually indicate a blood clotting abnormality. Turns out Buster's platelets (blood component responsible for clotting) were critically low. The vet said that if I did not notice it I would likely have come home some day to find he had bled to death without any previous signs. If we didn't have Marilyn there to play rough with him there would never have been any signs until it was too late. There can be many causes of this disorder and often it is fatal or recurring. Busters was attributed to a bad reaction to his vaccinations (which he will never again receive). The vet also told me later that his platelets were the lowest he had ever seen in a dog that survived. He was only 4 1/2 at the time. I believe everyone needs at least 1 failed foster!

Boston Terrier Costume

Terri Anderson was kind enough to sew a BT mascot costume for me. My husband took pictures last night with me wearing it.

Terri did a fantastic job, and Sheryl is credited with the mask.

I can't wait until our next event to wear it.
