New Foster Wilma

Lucky Wilma! Carolyn of Kamp Kanine pulled this seven year old girl from NewArk animal shelter, took her home for a nice oatmeal bath, and relaxation in her own doggie bed. Wilma may only see with one eye, but knows that life is appearing lots better with a loving foster home. Carolyn reports she is a sweet girl.

Two Former Fosters Playing

Oliver/Otti Has a Forever Home

Carolyn of Kamp Kanine reports that Oliver has a new home.

His new mom, Jennifer Larini, is thrilled that she is the lucky new Mom for this little pup, now named Otti. It's kind of like winning the lottery - so many people wanted to adopt him. Jennifer sends her thanks to all for making this adoption happen.

And kudos to Carolyn for her third foster placement in a week in a loving forever home! You rock, Carolyn!

Mia is Spayed

Mia was spayed yesterday and I just picked her up this morning. I attached a pic of her nestled in my lap, I'm glad she's resting. On the day before her surgery, she had a trip to the trail with my Yogi. She also had a retained baby tooth removed and an umbilical hernia fixed. This will be a challenge keeping her calm while she heals! Leslie Kaucic

New Foster Amelia

Meet new foster Amelia! Amelia is being surrendered by her owners because she is very anxious around the husband and their young children. Originally she was from a puppy mill. Amelias foster mom will be very patient in working with Amelia and hopefully she will be ready for adoption soon!

Goodby, Buggs

One of our hospice fosters, Buggs, crossed the Rainbow Bridge last night. He spent 5 wonderful months in his foster home and his foster daddy was sitting with him comforting him when he passed. He was very lucky to have the McFadden family in his life even if it was only for a short time.

Thanks to the McFaddens for their kind hearts in giving a happy, peaceful ending in a loving, comfortable home. And to all those foster families whose good hearts generate the love to care for dogs as they are passing.

Combine three cups water, one cup distilled vinegar, and a few drops of liquid dish detergent in a sprayer, shake to combine, and spray the window. Use your window squeegee to wash off the marks and then wipe dry with the squeegee. Fast, easy, cheap, and safe and you can avoid putting up signs that will further annoy your neighbors

New Foster Tyson

Tyson is our newest foster. He is a 10 yr old neutered male whos owner (whos had him since he was 10 wks old) is surrending due to marking issues.
Tyson spent the night sniffing and eating - we've already nicked name him "the vaccum". This may also account for the reason he's a little overweight LOL.
He is sweet, low key and likes everybody. He and Skeeter are busy ignoring each other so there doesn't seem to be any domination issues.

We'll keep you posted as we learn more about ths senior!

Porkchop Goes to His Forever Home

Porkchop got his forever home last weekend. Porkchop is the abused puppy with a leg with 5 fractures. He went to an incredible couple in Brooklyn. They have renamed him Mr.Bates after a character on a tv show who is a war hero with a bad leg.

He was our fundraising dog for the month of March, and we wanted to give an update on him.  As you remember, he is a ten month old baby, but he has already had more than his fair share of suffering.  His is the kind of case that makes you question people.  How could you do this to a baby?  Like Rocky, last month's featured pup, Chops was injured and abused by the very people who promised to care for him.

Although still very much a puppy, Chops has already had five fractures of his leg.  Four are old and calcified, and it is unclear if anything can be done for them.   He will probably always have a deformed paw.  The newest, we hoped, could be fixed with orthopedic surgery.

He went to the safe foster care of Foster Mom Carolyn McCarthy, and underwent surgery. After the surgery, Carolyn reported, "Chops is doing super. It's amazing how TLC and vet care can fix an abused boy in no time. Chops surgery was a success. His femor was shaved so it would sit in his hip socket. Chops now gets physical therapy and swims 2xs per week."

He stayed in foster for 2 more weeks so we could keep the PT going.  Then he went off to Brooklyn to live with his new family, which includes a Boston Brother - Billy.


Congratulations to everyone involved, and for giving this story another happy ending!

Soldier Dog

Ever wonder what goes into selecting, training, and caring about those dogs who serve in our military? "Soldier Dog", written by Maria Goodavage and published this year by Dutton, part of Penguin Books, introduces the reader to the life of military dogs in the United States Armed Forces. It's a fascinating read, well written, about what goes into these soldiers and the special relationships that develop between dogs and their handlers. And the kindness and love that goes into training them. Written in a relaxed and open style, this book is a page turner: once I started reading it, I couldn't put the book down. An affecting and warm book about a rarely discussed subject, a must read for every one who loves dogs and respects our military men and women who serve around the world.

Molly Has Knee Surgery

Nina, now known as Molly, is the 10 pound girl that was pulled from a puppy mill in Lancaster County, PA in April 2011. She was 6 years old and kept outside in a rabbit hutch all year round.  After being lovingly fostered by Jodi Groff, she found her forever home with the Bromley family.

When she was adopted, Molly showed some signs of a double luxating patella, but NEBTR didn't want to keep possible surgery from finding her a forever home.  So the Bromleys were told that should her condition worsen, NEBTR would have the treating vet who Jodi used for her care perform the surgery at NEBTR expense.

It was determined this month that Molly indeed needed double luxating patella surgery.  So the NEBTR community all pitched in to help.  Brad Estabrook and Liz O'Connell met the Bromleys and transported her from Connecticut to New Jersey, where Lowell and Ellen Thelin picked up the next leg of the relay.  They met Jodi Groff in Pennsylvania.

After the surgery, everyone me at Kamp Kanine to wish Molly a happy recovery and return to the Bromleys.  Pictured above are Jodi Groff, holding Molly, and the Bromley family. Jodi noted,   "I've had a lot of fosters but she is one of the ones that still tugs at my heart. The thought of such a social dog being held alone in a rabbit hutch then literally saved from being shot still haunts me. I couldn't have asked for a better family for her."

 It definitely takes a village!

Update on Rocky

Rocky was adopted to Deanna Chamberlain in Mt. Laurel NJ on Dec. 10. Rocky is extremely spoiled by Deanna and he loves every second of it. They take lots of walks and he loves to go for car rides with her. Deanna says she doesn't know how she lived without a dog for so long because she loves him being around so much!

Sassy Update

It's hard to believe that we've just had our two week anniversary with Sassy. She feels like she's always been with us. She's decided that she likes to sleep with my Mom and that she's not much of a morning person. I get up at 4:45 and take her out. She flies back up the stairs to crawl back under the covers with my Mom.

She's doing ok with the housetraining. It will take a while with all the changes she's had. We have to get used to her schedule. She's funny because she doesn't usually pee when we go for walks (too many new sights and sounds) but has to come back inside and go right out into her dog run. She did get into a bag with some paperback books and ripped into some of them even though she has lots of toys. She must be a voracious reader. Ha!

As you know, she loves to run and play and have her belly rubbed. We are doing our best to oblige. She has her own blanket o the couch so that she can make her own nest. She is a wild woman when she gets excited. Ha! She found out that our sofa makes a great backboard. She surfed off it like a skateboarder during one play session.

 Just wanted you to know that she's doing very well.

New Foster Mia

Hello everyone, I got little 1 1/2 yr old 12 lb Mia a few days ago. She is the smallest BT I've ever seen! She is so cute and sweet! Loves to give kisses. I attached a pic. She has the most adorable face! She was surrendered by her owner because the child was too rough with Mia. She said Mia would just take everything and never would bite. She is very submissive and nervous at times. But I think she is doing great. She is getting along good with my Golden Retriever, they have already started playing. She is so fast it's like a cartoon she buzzes all around him! Doing good with the cats too, but she wants to play rough with them at times. She listens well though, if I say "no" or even snap my fingers she responds quickly. She is going to the vet Monday and will need to be spayed. I will keep you updated!
