Brady From CT Lost in DE and Found

Brady, a 13 pound two year old Boston who lives in Connecticut, went to the NASCAR race at Dover, Delaware with his owners.

On Saturday, May 15th around 9am, Brady and his owners were at the Nascar races when he got frightened and managed to escape.  He managed to get free from his collar so he had no identification on him.  He was last seen running into a retirement residential area.

Fortunately, he was found, and here's a letter from his owner describing how it happened:

"Dear God.....it's a MIRACLE!!! a true God Given MIRACLE!!!!

I can't stop kissing and holding him and looking at him....the emotions I feel right now are not describable!!!

I just wanted to post really quick to tell everyone he is PERFECT....covered in ticks.....paws a little raw, legs a little scraped up, dirty, hungry but PERFECT!!!

he is so exhausted when the guy handed him over to me his body went limp in my arms and he started to kiss my face....I just collapsed on the side of the road....we never could have done it without these 2 fishermen....they were young and athletic and never gave up....

We got the call about 8:30 a.m. after just coming back from a morning search and feeling so discouraged because the morning was so quiet......the phone rang and I heard Chris shout "YOU SEE HIM?" I grabbed Lucy and my shoes and jumped in the truck before my husband finished talking to the guy.....2 crab fishermen were late for work and they were on the road where he was originally spotted (SO CLOSE TO WHERE WE WERE!) and they saw him but didn't have the number so one of them called their mom to get the number....they remember our flyer and the newspaper story...they said Brady was running so fast away from them....but they KNEW it was him....he stayed on the phone with me while Chris drove and they narrated everything that was happening...they were so out of breath from running... and telling us where to go and how to get to where they were.....Brady ran up to a horse farm but got scared by a big black dog...they lost sight of him when we pulled up so we got out and called for him and the 2 guys continued on and saw him again....they had unhitched their fishing boat and left it in the middle of the road...one guy on foot and the other in the truck.....the one running couldn't believe how fast he was and said he would chase him until he got tired....Brady finally got tired and dove into a ditch and the guy dove in after him.....he tried grabbing him but Brady got away and run under their truck....the guy then dove under the truck and swept Brady's back feet out from under him and that's when he grabbed him.....Chris and I were driving so fast towards the truck when the guy called us and said....DON'T WORRY....WE GOT HIM...HE'S SAFE AND INSIDE OUR TRUCK!" I was hysterical and said to Chris....PLEASE PLEASE LET IT BE HIM!! We got there about 30 seconds later and the guy got out of his truck and when we saw that it really was Brady I nearly collapsed right there in the road....He handed him over to me and Brady's face went from scared to happy when he heard my voice and I was smothering him with kisses....he instantly started licking my face and went limp in my arms with exhaustion.....I sat down in the middle of the road leaning against the truck bawling hysterically and rocking him back and forth.....OMG I still can't believe it....Drew and Mike are HEROES....sent from my Cooper Angel and God and all of your prayers and positive vibes and support....I don't know what I would have done without you all......thank you is not even close to what I possibly could say to express my gratitude....

Brady is laying in my lap as I type this with Lucy exhausted....we are going to shower and pack up and drive home today....WITH MY LIL MAN!!!!

WBOC already came out and interviewed us and Delaware State News came back to the HAPPY ENDING story....

I LOVE ALL OF YOU SO MUCH.....I'LL NEVER FORGET WHAT YOU ALL DID FOR US IN OUR TIME OF NEED.....THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS.....GOD BLESS YOU ALL!!! "

Benny Crosses the Rainbow Bridge

Benny the brown and white Boston had been found as a stray in Atlantic City back in December of 2007.

He was a very handsome boy who so needed the love and care Andrea Giordano, his forever mom, gave to him.

We all send you our deep condolences on his death, and a heartfelt thank you for adopting him.  I know Linda, who you brought him to for help, and Maria who got him from the shelter, will be equally sad to hear of his loss.

I hope the memories he left you with will keep you consoled during this awful time of grief, Andrea.

--Sheryl Trent, President, NEBTR

The last three years of his life were the best, and he had a loving home.   Maria, who got him from the shelter, notes,

"Andrea, I'm so sorry. I  know how much you loved Benny. And what a good life you gave him! I remember what a wreck he was at the shelter-, but he still managed to be such a good natured boy. That first day after I took him to the vet he slept under my Christmas tree for a good 18 hours--it was the first time he had some relief from his terrible skin problems. And then he was so lucky to find you.
I remember you've had your share of losses, how painful it must be for you.
You have my sympathy and my thanks for taking such good care of a poor dog who really needed you."

Michigan Rescued BT Needs Help

Hey everybody, on Mother's Day of this year, we adopted an adorably awesome Boston Terrier from the Midwest Boston Terrier Rescue in Ohio. He's 2 years old and only has one eye (made me love him even more...poor baby needs some love!). His name is Ozzy and he is an amazing little dog. We all love him very much and my son thinks he is the greatest dog ever.

Recently, he developed an ulcer in his good eye and after taking him to the vet, his eye wasn't responding to treatment very well. We were referred to a doggie ophthalmologist. We made our first appointment, thanks to all the lovely people who bought my dog treats, but we have a long way to go in his treatment if we want to save his eye for him and we can't afford it...this is going to cost us $4000+ and we simply do not have that much.

So, in an effort to save our little guy's eye, I've taken to making and selling homemade dog treats with Etsy. :) The website is right here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/ahippieheart

It's called Eye Love Ozzy and there is more info available on there. You are also welcome to contact me with the e-mail address provided on the Etsy site. If you don't have a dog or can't afford to help, please help me spread the word by sharing the website with friends and family! I really want to save our little guy's eye for him! He's had a rough life and deserves it! Thanks again!

Update on Jazzy

Here are pictures of Jazzy in her new wonderful new forever home. The Golden Retriever is Rosie, her new sister and the big black dog is Ben, the neighbor.

Jazzy was the dog that was left in the NY shelter mid birth when the owners found out she would need a C-section. All of the puppies died and she was in pretty rough shape. The shelter nursed her back to health and turned her over to NEBTR. She was lovingly fostered by Beth McFadden, then adopted by the Christie family.

Update on Belle's Surgery

Belle had her double luxating patella surgery today and everything went as planned and she came through like a champ. She is really hopped up on some heavy drugs and still waking up but she should be just fine. Tonight she'll be sleeping at the vet's office so they can continue to monitor her overnight but tomorrow she'll be back at her foster home resting and recuperating for the next six to twelve weeks. We'll make sure you get updates along the way. Thank you to anyone who donated to this life changing surgery; it's not too late to still contribute.

The Storm

They were together in the House.

Just the two of them.

It was a cold, dark, stormy night. The storm had come quickly and each time the thunder boomed he watched her jump.

She looked across the room and admired his strong appearance....and wished that he would take her in his arms, comfort her and protect her from the storm.

Suddenly, with a pop, the power went out.... She screamed..

He raced to the sofa where she was cowering.

He didn't hesitate to pull her into his arms.

He knew this was a forbidden union and expected her to pull back.

He was surprised when she didn't resist but instead clung to him.

The storm raged on....

They knew it was wrong...

Their families would never understand... So consumed were

they in their FEAR that they heard no opening of doors...

just the faint click of a camera.......

For All Who Rescue

"If Not For You" - Author Unknown

I would've died that day if not for you.

I would've given up on life
if not for your kind eyes.
I would've used my teeth in fear
if not for your gentle hands.

I would have left this life believing
that all humans don't care,
Believing there is no such thing
as fur that isn't matted,
skin that isn't flea bitten,
good food and enough of it,
beds to sleep on,
someone to love me, to show me
I deserve love just because I exist.

Your kind eyes, your loving smile,
your gentle hands
Your big heart saved me...
You saved me from
the terror of the pound,
soothing away the
memories of my old life.
You have taught me
what it means to be loved.

I have seen you do the same
for other dogs like me.
I have heard you ask yourself
in times of despair why you do it
when there is no more money,
no more room, no more homes.
You open your heart a little bigger,
stretch the money a little tighter,
make just a little more room...
to save one more like me.

I tell you with the gratitude
and love that shines in my eyes
In the best way I know how-
Reminding you why you go on trying.

I am the reason.
The dogs before me are the reason,
as are the ones who come after.
Our lives would've been wasted,
our love never given.

We would die if not for you.

Eddie Goes to the Rainbow Bridge

Our sympathy goes out to Judy, who reports, "We lost Eddie this afternoon to a stroke.  Thank goodness my vet was at the hospital.  He went peacefully.  I pray that he's crossing the bridge and running and playing and with sight!!   My heart hurts as it does with each one who moves on."

Judy and her family gave Eddie such love and caring, that he knew he was loved for the last part of his life.  It is remarkable people like Judy who make the NEBTR what it is.

Update on Tucker

Tucker and his foster mom Amy

Tucker and his forever mom Lisa

Tucker and his new family

Wanted to let you know that Tucker went to his forever home with Lisa DeFrees. She and I met in Hazleton, PA. Tucker immediately bonded with her – and both of them were kissing all over one another. Lisa was covered with doggy spit and Tucker was covered with lipstick. LOL

I’ve spoken with her several times since the exchange, and Tucker is doing very well. I’m sure he’s on his way to becoming a very (even more so) spoiled little guy. She had a basket of toys, new collar & leash, and tag all ready for him. Attached are a few photos… Tucker with me & Monty while we were waiting for Lisa, Tucker with his new Mommy, and Tucker with his new siblings. It’s quite a good-looking group!

Thanks for all your support with him… Debbi, Joy, Jodi especially… you ladies kept me SANE this! J

It’s so quiet around our house now… even with my zoo!

My Foster Dog is Beautiful

My foster dog stinks to high heaven. I don't know for sure what breed  he is.   His eyes are blank and hard. He won't let me pet him and growls when I reach for him. He has ragged scars and crusty sores on his skin. His nails are long and his teeth, which he showed me, are stained.  I sigh. I drove two hours for this. I carefully maneuver him so that I can stuff him in the crate. Then I heft the crate and put it in the car. I am going home with my new foster dog.

At home I leave him in the crate till all the other dogs are in the yard.  I get him out of the crate and ask him if he wants 'outside.'  As I lead him to the door he hikes his leg on the wall and shows me his stained teeth again.

When we comes in he goes to the crate because that's the only safe place he sees.  I offer him food but he won't eat it if I look at him, so I turn my back. When I come back the food is gone. I ask again about 'outside.'

When we come back I pat him before I let him in the crate, he jerks away and runs into the crate to show me his teeth.

The next day I decide I can't stand the stink any longer I lead him into the bath with cheese in my hand. His fear of me is not quite overcome by his wish for the cheese. And well he should fear me, for I will give him a bath.

After an attempt or two to bail out he is defeated and stands there. I have bathed four legged bath squirters for more dog years than he has been alive. His only defense was a show of his stained teeth that did not hold up to a face full of water. As I wash him it is almost as if I wash not only the stink and dirt away but also some of his hardness. His eyes look full of sadness now. And he looks completely pitiful as only a soap covered
dog can.

I tell him that he will feel better when he is cleaned. After the soap the towels are not too bad so he lets me rub him dry. I take him outside. He runs for joy. The joy of not being in the tub and the joy of being clean.   I,
the bath giver, am allowed to share the joy. He comes to me and lets me pet him.

One week later I have a vet bill. His skin is healing. He likes for me to pet him. I think I know what color he will be when his hair grows in. I have found out he is terrified of other dogs. So I carefully introduce him
to my mildest four legged brat. It doesn't go well.

Two weeks later a new vet bill for an infection that was missed on the  first visit. He plays with the other dogs.

Three weeks later he asks to be petted. He chewed up part of the rug.

Eight weeks later his coat shines, and he has gained weight. He shows his clean teeth when his tongue lolls out after he plays chase in the yard with the gang. His eyes are soft and filled with life. He loves hugs and likes to show off his tricks, if you have the cheese.

Someone called today and asked about him, they saw the picture I took the first week. They asked about his personality, his history, his breed.  They asked if he was pretty. I asked them lots of questions. I checked up
on them. I prayed. I said yes. When they saw him the first time they said he was the most beautiful dog they had ever seen.

Six months later I got a call from his new family. He is wonderful, smart, well behaved and very loving. How could someone not want him?

I told them I didn't know.

He is beautiful.

They all are.

Max Was Adopted

Max went to his forever home recently. I'm so happy for him! This boy was an owner surrender who peed submissively whenever someone would reach to pet him. He was such a sweet, calm little guy and it broke my heart to see him so afraid. He was adopted by the Kelly family who are just wonderful. Pat cried when she met him! They are calm, patient, and understanding, and I know they're going to be wonderful for Max.

Captain Beadoe

Beadoe was rescued by NEBTR, and given a home by the wonderful Joy Riley, who didn't mind at all that he is completely deaf.  He was very close to being put to sleep, but look at how he is living now!

Teddy Needs a Home

Teddy is a Boston Terrier/Pug mix estimated to be 8-10 years old at the most. He is a stocky 26 lbs. and is built like a pug, including floppy ears and a curly tail, but he wears the black and white suit of a Boston Terrier. He's adorable! Teddy was turned in to a shelter by his callous owners because he was getting too old. He arrived into foster care with untreated glaucoma with vision totally lost in one eye, and the second eye in such bad shape that our vets were unable to save his vision in that one too. Teddy is on medication which is working to control the pressure in the right eye, although he is now totally or almost totally blind. He needs to take this medication twice a day which he takes quite happily with a bit of peanut butter or cheese. How very sad that had treatment when the glaucoma began he would still be able to see.

Our vet has diagnosed him with very early stage pituitary-dependent Cushing's, but he does not yet show any of the typical symptoms. Because of this, he has not been started on any treatment but he will need to be monitored.

Teddy has been through so much, it is understandable that he is scared. His recent blindness makes it difficult for him to interact with other dogs (and cats) because he is easily startled and will act defensively. It would be best for Teddy to be in a home with no other dogs or cats. It is also recommended that he goes to a home with no very young children.

Even with all of that he has gone through Teddy is a loving and sweet boy.

He is crate trained and house trained. In general, Teddy is pretty low-energy and does not need a lot of exercise. He enjoys hanging around in the house and wandering around the yard. He will go for a walk on a leash, but he is eager to get moving, even without his sight, and will pull to go. He will need some guidance on leash manners.

Teddy's favorite things so far have been chewing on bones or bully sticks. He likes to press up against your leg and get lots of head and tummy rubs. Oh, and treats. He will sit very nicely for treats. He recently started enjoying digging through the toy box and selecting a stuffed toy to play with and suck on. He wants nothing more than to have a quiet home where he can be settled in with those few things and be loved for the sweet and special guy that he is.

Because Cushings can be an expensive and life threatening disease if Teddy doesn't receive treatment, we are offering a special incentive for anyone who would consider giving him the life he desperately deserves. Northeast Boston Terrier Rescue will completely sponsor his medical expenses throughout his life in the same way we would any other permanent foster dog. All we want for him is to find a home where he will be relaxed and will have happiness and love for the rest of his life.

I know you have all been following Liam, the dog who was found half starved.

Under Jill Dunn's amazing and loving foster care, Liam is blossoming.  Here's Liam today.  You wouldn't know it was the same dog!  He looks absolutely amazing!
