Shiloh Goes to the Rainbow Bridge

Shiloh was the "Boston-in-disguise" that NEBTR rescued almost five years ago. An NEBTR volunteer went to pick up a Boston because its owner had died, or had to go into a nursing home. She found two dogs, the Boston and this other 10-year-old little dog, Shiloh.  She knew Shiloh would end up being killed in a shelter, so she took him too.  My daughter Alexandra adopted him.  This is her Facebook eulogy to Shiloh, aka "little man" and his picture.

This week we had to say goodbye to Shiloh. he has been the love and light of my life for the last 4 1/2 years, and I feel so lucky I got to spend the time I did with him. Shi was the best sweet, grumpy, loving, adorable lil baby old man pup I could have hoped for. I miss him terribly.

Thank you to Chris Arena for being the best co-parent around, and to Grace Kim Jiro Marzano James Frankie and Aaron Kovacs for being stellar roommate-godparents. thanks to Trevor K. Squaresville, Wyatt Miller, and of course Deborah Dolan for taking care of him when I traveled. I'm glad he got to see so many places, know so many people, and eat so many treats. my heart is broken but i know he lived a full, happy life.

Below is a photo of Shiloh and Gus when they first arrived at NEBTR.  What a difference love makes!

Update on Sara, Papi and Shiloh

Sara is our little foster, who has had a number of health issues over the past few months that have delayed her spay and availability for adoption.

Sara is the little one in the dog bed.

In the group photo, Sara is the littlest one.  Papi, who we adopted from NEBTR in October 2011 is the biggest.  Tara, our first BT, is the medium one (more black than the others).  She's also my agility girl.

Papi is the one in bed with Bill.  Bill originally didn't want an older dog, and wasn't really interested in Papi, but I really wanted him.  Now they are inseparable.  I should get so much love and attention!!!

I've also attached a photo of Shiloh.  I bet you think he isn't a Boston Terrier.  He's in disguise.

Actually, he is the Jack Russell mix that a NEBTR volunteer picked up when she picked up a Boston from an elderly person who either died or was entering a nursing home because she (the volunteer) was concerned about what would happen to him.  I was always worried about him, thinking that he would never get adopted from a Boston Terrier site.  My 26-year-old daughter was ready to get a dog, but isn't really into short-noses (except ours of course!), so i sent her the link to Shiloh and she adopted him.  Megan Sanchez was his foster mom.  He is doing great and is a really fun little guy.  Ally and her boyfriend Chris love him and so do we.

Thank you for all you have done for these pups Deb!  You are an amazing volunteer and all of these dogs are so fortunate to have found you!  What a difference you have made in their lives!!

When volunteer Sara Liberte went to pick up Boston Terrier Gus, she couldn't leave Shiloh behind and took him too! Then Megan fostered him. It was a great story and look at the lucky Shiloh now!

Sara your BT is also very lucky! You ran right into NYC as soon as we told you about her and pulled her out of the shelter and have nursed her though kennel cough and pneomonia.

Wonderful job!

A Special Rescue Story

Hi everyone,

I wanted to tell everyone about a very special rescue that took place over the weekend.

We got a call from a woman in Florida who needed our help. She told us that her mother had gotten very ill with Alzheimer's and had moved in with her other daughter to be cared for. She left behind two dogs in her home, a 6 yo BT named Gus and his buddy, an 11 yo Jack Russell Terrier named Shiloh. The pair of dogs had been living alone in the house for a year, with the son in law coming by to feed and take them out a few times per day.

The daughter in Florida was worried for them and the daughter that took in the mother had become overwhelmed with caring for her mother and increasing debt that she could no longer care for the dogs. She and her husband were planning in euthanizing Shiloh the JRT and were also considering doing the same to Gus the BT. They were simply overwhelmed with health issues, debt and the responsibility of going to the other house to care for Gus and Shiloh every day.

Well our colleagues in the Pittsburgh area sprang into action! Sara Liberte drove several hours to pick up Gus the BT. When she arrived, she could not bear to leave Shiloh behind, just because he wasnt a BT. She took them both home!

NEBTR volunteer Leah Colonello picked up Gus the BT to foster later that day and reports that he is sweet, happy and healthy. Another NEBTR volunteer, Megan Sanchez, took Shiloh the JRT until he finds a home or foster home. He is also sweet happy and healthy!

The daughter in Florida who orginally contacted us was so moved by our actions she wrote: "I don't have the words to tell you how grateful I am for the NEBTR volunteers. I have decided to start helping at an animal rescue here in Orlando as a result of your kindness. My sister tells me that her husband cried from happiness when he came home and told her that the rescue volunteer took Shilo too. Should I contact you for updates on Gus & Shilo? I also plan to send $25 per paycheck to help pay for the vet bills, should I send the checks to the address on the surrender agreement?"

We are so grateful to everyone involved in this rescue effort. Gus even has a couple near Pittsburgh already interested in him! Shiloh is available - spread the word! Check out their picture I have attached here. Many many thanks to Sara, Leah and Megan and countless others who helped with this and other NEBTR rescues every day! Every action goes a long long way.

And Megan writes, "Here is Mr. Shiloh!! Thought I would share some photos of him. He is a great all around guy! Likes anybody and anything! He loves to take walks and even "walks himself" as he puts the leash in his mouth. He is too cute. A local rescue contact of mine (www.happypawshappyhomes.org) volunteered to pay to get him updated on shots. She also said she would neuter him but he is fortunately already neutered. He just started eating yesterday from all the stress which is a great sign. He is really opening up and soliciting attention from us all, including the kids, and gets excited when i come home from work. Thank you lisa for setting this all up and Sara for taking them both. It all worked out thanks to loving, caring, moral, people! Love you all!"
