Bea Graduates

Bea graduated last night from her basic obedience class! The instructor said she is ready to move on to the next course if we wish. I'm going to work with her a bit at home and teach her some new things. So far she knows sit, down, stay (in both sit and down positions), come (although we're still working on it), dance (she goes up on her hind legs and spins in a circle) and paw. I hope to teach her high five, roll over and to walk on her hind legs, amongst other things. She has taken a curiosity to frisbees so now that the weather is finally warming up, I'll see what she can do. She is an incredible girl. Thanks again NEBTR family (and most importantly Robin Leone, her foster mom) for bringing me this great girl!

Raelynn Runs a Marathon

Hi everyone,

My name is Raelynn and I'm a new volunteer. I decided to join after I fell in love with and eventually adopted Bea. Bea came into my life after I lost my Boston/Pug mix, Sophie, to a brain tumor in December. She was amazing and taught me so much that I hope to pass on to little Beabea.

On April 28th, I will be running my first half marathon (13.1 miles) in order to raise money for the National Canine Cancer Foundation in Sophie's memory. The following week, I will be running The Broad Street Run (10 miles) to continue raising money. I have two friends running with me and we hope to raise $5,000. As of this afternoon, we have raised $1,295. Please consider a donation and know that 100% of the proceeds are going to NCCF.  You can read more about us and donate at this site: http://www.wearethecure.org/friends/sophiesfight

During Sophie's battle, I chronicled everything we were going through in order to update anyone I knew who was asking, but more importantly, for anyone like myself who felt alone and was going through this horrible disease with their best friend. A link to my blog can be found on the donation page if you are interested in reading or care to pass it on to anyone who may need it.

Thank you for your time!

From Foster Bea's Mom

I recently adopted Bea from NEBTR. She has been with us for only 2 months and it feels like forever. She had some digestive problems that have been successfully diagnosed after ruling out internal parasites or disease. She has irritable bowel syndrome and is responding beautifully to treatment for this and a fixed diet. I would love to help in any way. My baby is from NEBTR and I am so grateful for your organization and the ability to play a small part in rescuing a boston. I live on Long Island and can do transport or home checks. Please let me know if I can help.

Amber Finds a Forever Home

Just wanted to let you know that Amber will be going to her Forever Home on Tuesday, February 17th! Her new mommy has off that week and will be able to give her the much needed one-one attention she so deserves. And by a happy coincidence, she will be the neighbor of Bea. The two girls will be neighbors again, only this time they are in loving homes and not cages.

From Bea's Forever Mom

Here is the email I got with the update on Bea. She is living in luxury! (Cody is Bea's mom's other Boston who is also 5)

--Lisa

Hi Lisa,

Sorry I haven't gotten in touch with you until now. I had this awful flu and today is the first day I am functioning normally. The good thing is that I stayed home from work all week and got to spend a lot of time with Bea and Cody. So I wanted to update you.

The dogs are doing extremely well and absolutely adore each other. Yesterday, they played so much all day that they were like zombies, sleeping by 7 pm and out cold. They both sleep with me in bed and we have a system where Bea sleeps on my left and Cody sleeps on my right. In the morning, they wake up and immediately begin play. It's a sight to enjoy for me.

Bea has transformed--literally. Her back legs have gotten stronger in just a week. She leaps and bounds after Cody, and even my parents were saying how she already looks ten times better. Pretty soon, with all of the play time, I think she will have full use of all limbs. She basically has that right now.

I don't have a digital camera but I am buying film for my camera today and will start taking pics. Bea has a beautiful new collar and raincoat, and we visited my vet just to get a file on her started and have her checked out. I started her on her heartworm meds and she is eating Hills Science diet, what my vet loves (and he is an amazing vet).

Bea had a few accidents but she is getting much better. I am using the bell method where I leave a bell by the door and ring it when we go outside, and I lather her with affection and treats when she goes potty outside. It is working very well. The only accident she had was yesterday, during a downpour, where she refused to leave the house and managed to sneak away and poop on the carpet. But after that I bought her a rain jacket so no more excuses for me or her:)

I'll send you pics as soon as I get them done. I wanted you to know that she is in puppy paradise and so spoiled. This morning, we were outside playing fetch with Cody. I try to teach her to fetch but she is more interested in chasing Cody at this point. But I couldn't stop laughing because she chases leaves!! Poor thing doesn't know anything about life yet. She will though.

Anyway thanks again and I apologize again for being so ill and short when I met you. I'm terrible at being sick. Hope you are well and look forward to talking to you soon.

Love always,
Cody, Bea and Theryn

Bea Goes Home!

Bea, or Miss Bea McGee as we called her, went to her forever home today. What a way to start out the new year! She is going to live out on Long Island. I was hoping her new mom would bring their other Boston with to meet Bea but she did not. Anyways, I think Bea will be happy and spoiled in her new home. She came a long way in the 6 weeks she was with us. Most of the credit should go to our Bostons Cleveland and Penny and our Pits Hooch and Pebbles. They taught Bea so much in so little time, more than we ever could have. It was great having Bea and we will miss her but she will have a great life in her new home!

--Lisa

Update: I received a text message last night from Bea's new owner. She said that Bea spent the whole night playing with her new Boston friend Cody. After they were done playing they both passed out on the sofa snoring away! I am calling her tonight to see how everything is going so i should have more updates!

More About Our Foster Bea (With Photo)

I also wanted to update you that for the first time today Bea made it down some steps and she made it onto the couch.

She is the most active one in the house lol, but up until today she was
having trouble with going down steps. So seeing her make progress is
great!

Update on Our Foster Bea

So much to tell you!
Bea went to the vet last night. She did awesome! She is 19.7 pounds.
She has tartar and some gingivitis so she will need a teeth cleaning
to get rid of the quite stinky breath that she has. Even though her
legs are a little bowed it shouldnt be a problem, she just needs to
gain some muscle in them. She received an ear cleaning and
a "manicure/pedicure". We are still waiting on the results of her
fecal and heart worm test. As soon as we know I will let you know.

She is also making great strides at home. She has made friends with
everyone, our cat is especially fond of her. She doesnt quite
understand their rough playing so we play with her on the side. She
finally started playing with a rope toy last night. As for potty
training, she has not had an accident ANYWHERE since Sunday(which was
her 1st day home) and even then she only had 2 1/2 accidents. She is
doing great pottying outside and our crew is helping to teach her.
She has also started to learn "Sit". Last night she did it quite a
few times without any help. Beacause her legs are weak she gets tired
easily she has a hard time with steps, but this morning she made it
all the wait up the stairs ALL BY HERSELF! We were so proud of her!

She is doing so well and will have no troubles finding a forever home!
