Harley Goes to Her Forever Home

My Lil Bella saying goodbye to Harley this morning, she just Loved Harley. They were like lil sisters, playing all day together. She will be missed. Not the greatest clear pic but they were kissing and I thought it was like they knew.

Chris Schezzini

And here is Harley with her new Mommy. Thanks to Chris's loving care, Harley is ready for a forever home of her own. Chris writes, "Headed out at 5 am this morning to meet her.
I was so happy I got the chance to see Harley with her! She seems like a very caring and loving person and I hope Harley will adapt very quickly to her and be on her way to happiness. I didn't think Id beable to let her go. The tears all welled up in my eyes while I tried to keep my composure until they drove off then they tears flooded for the next 2 1/2 hours for the lonely trip back home.

I know this is a good thing we all do but we all love them so much too and it hurts like crazy when you have to say goodbye!

May she adjust fast and be loved like I loved her here. As for myself? I have been a mess all day, can't stop thinking of her and worrying about her and miss her like crazy! I know she will be happy we found her a wonderful, Loving Home! Thanks so much Julie! Love U."

PJ's Favorite Toy

Pinky Goes to Her Forever Home

I'm delighted to share that Pinky went to her forever home today. I have to believe the woman who adopted her reminded her of her previous owner. She went right to her and gave her some loving and then hopped in her car. I am anxious to hear how they make out.

I also want to say what a pleasure it is working with NEBTR. You make it so easy to foster. You offer such wonderful support to us all. We have clear instructions on what we need to do and you are ALWAYS there with words of encouragement. I feel very lucky to part of such a wonderful group!
Thank you ALL,
Loree McOwen

Airlines Ban Snub-Nosed Breeds

From the Huffington Post:

Airlines Ban Bulldogs, Snub-Nosed Breeds From Flying Because Of Health Risks To Dogs

If Fido is of a snub-nosed breed, he might not be allowed to fly commercial.

Airlines have banned bulldogs, pugs and other brachycephalic breeds from their planes due to health risks to the dogs, according to The New York Times.

The pooches have trouble breathing due to their short noses, and their respiratory conditions worsen when flying at high altitudes in cargo holds where temperatures can be very hot or too cold, Time points out.

The Agriculture Department reports 189 animal deaths on commercial flights between June 2005 and June 2011, The New York Times reports. "Of those animals, 98 — more than half — were brachycephalic breeds."

The harsh reality has caused Delta to ban the breed from flying in cargo holds. Other airlines, such as American, Continental and United have enacted restrictions on when the dogs can travel.

On its website, United lists which dogs aren't allowed to travel in the cargo area during warm months:

New summer embargo - breed restriction For the safety of your animal, United Airlines does not accept the following short-nosed dog breeds as either checked baggage or cargo from June 1 - September 30. This restriction does not apply to animals traveling with you in the cabin.

American Bulldog
Boston Terrier
Boxer
English or French Bulldog
King Charles Spaniel
Lhasa Apso
Pug
Shar-Pei
Shih Tzu

American Airlines states it will not transport pets when temperatures are above 85 degrees or below 45 degrees. The airline also specifically lists which breeds will not be accepted as "checked luggage." Other airlines, such as Canadian airlines, don't list breed restrictions on their site, The Globe and Mail points out.

The ban isn't only applied to dogs; some cat breeds, including Himalayan and Persian, have also been placed on the no-fly list.

In 2010, at least two dogs and a cat were found frozen after traveling long distances in plane cargo holds. The Department of Transportation states 33 animal deaths were reported by airlines between November 2009 and October 2010.

Japan Airlines banned bulldogs from flying in 2007, stating it has dealt with a concerning number of deaths among the breed because of their breathing difficulty, MSNBC reports.

Passengers who are looking to fly their beloved pooches to a location have one of two options: Bring them along as carry on (if the dog is less than 20 pounds), or buy them a ticket on a private jet.

The ban has inspired companies, such as Pet Airways, to charter bulldogs and other animals to several locations, The New York Times reports. Short-nosed breeds make up about a quarter of the airline's "passengers," who are monitored by pet attendants.

Update on Tiki, Now Cartola

Hi you all from NEBTR,

I am writing to thank you all for the gift that Tiki (we renamed him after a Brazilian Samba musician called Cartola, it means top hat) has been in our lives. He is a sweetheart, very gentle and well mannered. I haven't written before because I was taking a 2-week long exam for grad school, and he stood by my side all the time. Real buddy. The walks with him were the best moments of my day in the last 2 weeks.

In the first week Cartola got very anxious when we left the house to go to the supermarket but now he trusts that we'll be back so he is fine. He loves the walks and I think he is well adapted. He has really bonded with us, and we are all very happy. Thank you very much!

Check his pictures attached!

Cheers,
Daniela & Ademir
