Update on Trigger and Magoo

Here is an e-mail from the Stones updating info on Trigger and Magoo. They adopted the two boys in October. I wanted to thank Gilda for recommending such a great home.

"They are both getting along fine. I had to take Trigger to the Vet about 3 weeks ago because he vomited in the morning when he got up, didn't want to eat, and was listless. It turned out that he just needed to have a bowel movement (good-sized one!) and then he was fine. His appetite returned and he's been good since then. We have no idea why this happened, unless he somehow ate some of Magoo's or Polly's dogfood and just had too much food. I have to watch him and Magoo because they will go and eat out of the other dog dishes. Polly doesn't do that, but then, she never had to go without eating. I have noticed lately that Magoo and Trigger are no longer gulping their food down like it was going to go away. They like a treat in the morning and another one in the afternoon. They eat about 7:30 a.m. and then Magoo always lets me know when it's about 4:30 p.m. because he's ready for supper.

The three of them play together pretty good. Trigger usually has a toy in his mouth and Polly & Magoo will chase him. They can really get going! Magoo barks while he chases! Magoo never plays with toys. Trigger & Polly love to play with the pull toy together.

They all sleep in our bedroom at night; Polly in her kennel, Magoo in his dogbed or Trigger's kennel, and Trigger in our bed. (We leave the doors open on the kennels.) This is their choice. There are rarely (if any) wetting accidents in the house now. Once in awhile Trigger will poop, though. We had a couple of days of really warm weather & the snow melted. They loved being outside running around and checking things out. In the house, they like to lie in their little dog beds in the sunshine when it comes through the front door window.

Every so often, they will get in a tiff and we have to separate them for a few minutes. I think maybe one gets jealous or something that sets them off, or maybe decides to be leader of the pack for a few minutes :-)

Magoo seems to have gained a lot of strength in his legs; he runs faster and has actually jumped up on the couch a couple of times, and has also jumped off. Usually, tho, we pick him up and take him down from the couch or a chair. He has no trouble going up and down stairs, whether in the house or outside. Trigger has mellowed out quite a bit, doesn't bark as much, and generally seems content.

We are enjoying them and are glad we have them.

What this unseasonably warm day means to us dog owners

Today was unseasonably warm in NJ. Took the two resident rescue dogs and our current foster dog on a wonderful walk in the sunlight with nobody wearing a coat. There was prancing into the sky and ssnorting/sniffing by the foster dog, and peeing on absolutely everything by the resident dogs. We did not want the walk to end- it was wonderful. Upon getting back to the homestead we looked at the backyard and knew it was time to dive in with all the melting ice and snow!!!!!. A half hour later and a half filled black heavy duty leaf bag later, our yard was somewhat cleaned. This has to be up there in the grossest moments of a 3 dog NJ household this winter. Yuck, yuck, yuck. It has been so cold and despite my best chisseling efforts, I had to wait to this unseasonable "thaw."

Amber's Forever Home

Hi All,

Just wanted to let you know that Amber has gone to her Forever Home with Sandy in Long Island today. We'll miss her but know she will be well taken care of!! Amber was scared and not sure what was going on but I think she will be fine.

Amber is around 6 years old. She was rescued from a puppy mill in November 2008 and is currently in a foster home in PA. Amber weighs around 16 lbs but could gain a few more to get a more girly figure. She is up to date on all her shots and is scheduled for her spay on January 14th - which she will then be ready for her Forever Home. She gets along with the other resident dogs and is learning how to play. She likes to go on walks and walks pretty well on a leash, considering she was never walked on a leash a day in her life. She will need to be with someone who can provide lots of patience and TLC as she learns to trust. She is still a frightened little girl (who wouldn’t be living in a nasty mill for 6 years). Amber doesn’t like to be alone for more than a few hours at a time and is working on house training. She is looking forward to spending the rest of her life with a loving family in a warm cozy house We require an application , homecheck and adoption fee. Meetup for NEBTR

Was a huge success!!

We ended up with almost 30 BT's there, along with 1 SharPei and my nephew, Quincy the poodle (who is Emmetts best playtime buddy). Joy came with Cal and Emily and Jeff came with Amber and Chance. Amber looks great and did really well with the huge crowd of dogs and people. All of the dogs had a great time and should be sleeping very soundly tonight. My Emmett, who is usually completely overwhelmed in situations like this one did great. I am really proud of him. Poor Bingo was not allowed to play because he had surgery to remove more of a mast cell tumor last week. He would have just loved to get in the middle of it all!

The MeetUp folks brought literally more stuff than I could fit in my car.....My boss graciously allowed Joy and I to store the stuff in the storage area upstairs. In the next few days I will make an inventory of what was donated and forward to you, Sheryl to figure out what to do with it all. There are beds, leashes, collars, coats, food, treats, toys and more. We did get a few cash and check donations which I will forward to you, Victoria.

It ws an exhausting day for me, but so worth it. I took pictures, but believe the dogs were moving so quickly that I only got portions of BT bodies in the pics LOL.

Lisa Berkenstock, my very good friend and most wonderful dog trainer was there for about 1 1/2 hours answering questions and playing with the dogs.

WOW!! What a great time today! It was great to see Emily, Jeff and Barb--I'll post pictures later. It was a blast watching 20+ Bostons running around, barking, playing, chasing balls, etc. Cal is absolutely exhausted and all he did was jump on everybody .
We got a ton of wonderful donations, too. What a generous, kind group of people.
I can't think of a better way to have spent a nice, spring-like day in Feb.

Iggy Update

So Iggy has been on a search and rescue mission for all the extraneous toys and bones that Tink has meticulously hidden around the apartment over the past 3 years we've lived here. His most recent discovery was Tink's long lost kong which was buried underneath our bed way in the middle. So Iggy bravely crawled under the bed to retrieve it! To date he has found a bully stick in the front closet, a bone under my dresser, the kong under the bed, and countless treats around Tink's crate. And as a result of these findings he continues to search every nook and cranny in the house REPEATEDLY!

Yesterday Nick and I finally gave the beefcake a bath and while he didn't like it by any stretch he did ok and endured it just fine. He is soooo soft and shiny now! I love the neem oil products for these dogs' coats! Beautiful!

Iggy is doing better with his growling and being possessive over high value treats and chews. He's learning that we're not going to take them and that we will play with him when he is nice and not when he is mean. Because he is so completely food motivated a behavior modification plan works very nicely for him. We've been working on "drop it" with high value items giving another high value item for dropping it and then giving the first item back to help establish a positive experience with dropping a valued item. I have to sneak the treats out of the container because if he even thinks I have one, he drops the bully stick or bone or whatever else and waits for a treat before the command is given!

Definitely improvement overall although he did bark and almost snap at Tink who got too close to him this evening while he was chewing on a bully....I will say in his defense he moved away from her and she sought him out. But still....so any suggestions on how to work with the growling at another dog around a highly valued item I would be happy to hear!

We've figured out the roles that Tink and Iggy have in this house--Tinker is the princess and Iggy is the court jester. He has that goofy but self-absorbed attitude and is generally a laid back guy! He won't move out of the way for Tink though...he lets her bump into him repeatedly and then get confused and bump into the walls trying get through and well it's not such a nice scene for the Little One...

Iggy has a strong chew drive which has been working out for Tink quite nicely. He chews the bullys and gets them all soft and white and then drops them for something else to do. She comes along and because they've been started and are soft, she will sit down and chew on the bully for 5 or so minutes in heaven! It's so cute! And Iggs is pretty good at leaving her alone with minimal reminders, but some supervision.

There's been a nice flow and routine to the house over the past week or so. We've had Iggy for 3 weeks and he is getting into a groove with us. Tink gets into bed in the middle of the night and for the past few mornings around 6 or so, we left Iggy out of his crate and he sleeps under the covers for the last hour or so of sleeping. It's amazing how much more he trusts and is comfortable in the house too... he was always a fairly trusting dog, but even so, it has deepened and really shown in his attitude with bones and with sleeping and hanging out...

I want the best home possible for this beefy guy. Nick and I feel a home that doesn't have young kids that has a dog or maybe not would be best for this guy. Also a home that people don't work crazy long work hours. He's such a social people dog, it wouldn't be fair for him to be alone for 10 plus hours.

Murphy's Forever Home

Good Morning everyone,

Just a note Murphy went to his new for ever home yesterday. He will be living with Mary and Dennis Delay in long island NY. the transfer went just great. he was all Boston wiggles when he meet her and climbed right into her lap. just like he belonged there. They had a 3 hour trip home and they both did very well. I did talked to her last night when she got home and her Ziggy and Murphy were still a little tense but nothing to bad. although Murphy did barked at Ziggy and he went to sulk( Mary's words) under the bed. They went for a walk together last night and where both sharing her lap on the couch. i am hopeful this is going to be a great match. Mary understands it takes time for all the little and big things to work out. I will check with her tomorrow and see how things are going. she also has my number and i told her to call any time with any questions she might have. Robin thanks again for all your help. Now on to the next one LOL. You all have a great weekend.

The Lilly Chronicles - Part 5

Well, Lilly has been here just over a month.
and the progress she has made is super!
she goes in and out with all the other dogs
she even goes out when we open the door for her!!
She is learning to just sit still when we want to pick her up
and she knows the feeding times and the excitement everyone gets when
its supper time.

We still need to work on asking for out, learning to trust a bit more
and the leash. Right now Lilly will not tolerate the leash and adding
to her anxiety is not a good thing right now.

Lilly is even learning to come through the Doggie door!

She is responding so well and her continued progress is hopeful.
Lilly is looking for a family with older children (10+) dogs and or
cats...can be an only dog though. Perferably a fenced in yard not a
must though and someone who will contiune to work with Lilly.

Tink's Foster Iggy

I just wanted to let you all know that we picked Iggy up this morning in Lancaster. This is my first experience with owner surrender and fostering so I wasn't sure what to make of it all. Iggy's a pretty big boy probably right around 25 lbs--he makes Tink look very tiny at 15lbs! He's well mannered for the most part-- knows how to sit, comes when called (and when he doesn't I know he's found something good, like Tink's kong) and is very content to chew on a bone.
He did show some aggression when Tink literally bumped into him, he continued to growl and become quite possessive of the bone. He did this twice and lost the bone both times and earned a time out both times. He has since then let me touch him while chewing and brought a bone over to chew in my lap. He responds well to verbal praises and cherios (thanks Jodi!) and I think it's only a matter of time before he realizes I'm not going to take everything away from him. He came from a home where it seemed like the kids (5yrs and 1 younger) were all over him even dropping stuff into his crate. I'm sure he had things taken away from him quite frequently. He loves and needs a lot of one on one attention and rightfully so!

He's a smart boy who went right to the door after we came home and immediately pooped outside! He and Tink said brief hellos (she licked him!) but for the most part could care less that the other is around.
Aside from his age of 9 he shouldn't be too much of a challenge to place. He's active but not outrageous, inquisitive but fairly polite. I think a family with an older kid or no kids at all would be lovely! Of course this is all day one, I am well sure that things can and probably will change a bit as he becomes more comfortable!

As I type this, Nick is teaching him "down" and distinguishing between sit and down and back and forth and trying to trick him with not much luck. With Igg's food motivation the whole training thing should be relatively easy.

He's such a happy guy--he's going to make the right family a wonderful pet!

Sparky

Robin, i wanted to take the time to tell you how much i have come to love sparky. my vet puts his age at about 3 years old, which possibly explains why he was dumped at the shelter to begin with; they never taught/trained him to be the gentleman he is quickly becoming, and if you don't train a boston from day one, wellllll, you can get a sparky. he takes to the attention and training quickly; he loves the attention and is actually quite a bit smarter than my last two that came as pups from a champion breeder here in CT. he is a snuggly love bug, but i have had to draw the line with him as he would prefer being "pack leader", but to his dismay, it's me. i've been working on manners and obedience, and he does test me now and then, but i am firm with him and if he had a tail to go between his legs, that's what would happen, as he goes into his crate for a self-imposed time out when reprimanded.

we have no problems so far passing other dogs; he looks, but no barking or carrying on. i have a trainer that will be working with us starting next week regarding walking on leash without pulling, heeling and paying attention. he does have a short attention span right now, but i am working with him daily and he is getting so much better. he does sit, down, stay and leave it. he sits at his dinner bowl until i say he can have it. he's a great watch dog, and has learned to stop barking and sit when it is someone i know at the door. he is especially fond of the pizza guy; i wonder why? (cheese) he has learned that i go out the door and in the door before he does. kip told me he doesn't really know how to play, so we work on fetch and other fun games. i am not fond of tugging games, so we don't do any of that. my vet says it's not so much aggression as it is fear with him, which is why he reacts with a growl or bark. working on that also.

i! sparky & i would love to be on your website. i am so excited to let you know that sparky goes on walks with other dogs now (together w/one walker) and loves to run & play in the dog park (yes, they are all unleashed). no fighting whatsoever!!!!!!! he is in a 4 wk training program 2 hrs a day and is loving it. we are working primarily on the front door greeting; i need him to bark for my protection but NOT to go for my friends when they come in the front door. he needs to learn to back off & stay, so the trainer is working on that with me. not sure if i sent a picture; here are a couple just in case i did not. he is a wonderful dog and i feel truly blessed to have him in my life. one of the pics has him in his favorite window in the sun.


and goofy as it sounds, we do the "sparky dance" every night. he likes to walk on his hind legs, so when i say let's do the sparky dance, he dances on his hind legs, and yes, i dance with him. corny, but fun.

he lets me handle him anywhere (kip did a great job desensitizing him) and still gives me kisses, even though he can't always sit on the couch with me and must sleep in the crate at night (not in my bed where we would both prefer) so he understands he is the dog and i am the person (this per my vet's instructions for now). right now it's invitation only so he curls up in his wonderfully comfortable bed looking sad & pathetic (i tried it out) and loves to lie in the sun in the window seat all day.
i have him licensed in Avon, and you are not getting him back. he loves to ride in the car with me and get a plain munchkin from the girls at the dunkin donuts drive thru. i usually am not a people food for dogs person, but he loves it so it's a special treat for him when we go.

my vet says he's a wonderful dog but a handful, and that we should be perfect together as long as i am willing to put in the time with him, which of course i am. he's a wonderful, loving dog and i am so happy that i have the opportunity to get to keep him and love him.

kip is a gem, and did such a great job with him.

A Major Achievement

Ha-Na has finally learned how to jump up onto the couch all by
herself! Now, if we could just figure out those steps!

She will go up a few steps if i put her in the middle. But she wont
start going up by herself. im sure she will be flying up and down
with the other girls in no time. She really is a loving dog, so much
wanting for attention.

Amber Finds a Forever Home

Just wanted to let you know that Amber will be going to her Forever Home on Tuesday, February 17th! Her new mommy has off that week and will be able to give her the much needed one-one attention she so deserves. And by a happy coincidence, she will be the neighbor of Bea. The two girls will be neighbors again, only this time they are in loving homes and not cages.

Daphne Update

I just got off the phone with Valerie, Daphne's new mom. I must say that I am very pleased to say that things are going wonderfully! Daphne came out of her crate yesterday, and pottied outside with the other dogs. She now has a fenced in yard to run, and came back in all by herself with her new "pack". She also was out and about with her dog brother and sister for a ride in the car to Petsmart. Valerie said that she walks better on a leash then all the others! She even got to sleep in bed with them last night. Which I am sure that she loved! She is bonding especially with her new dad, Kevin. Valerie says that she thinks it's because he gives her lots of food, go figure. Talking to her definitely confirmed my thoughts of her being a great fit with their family. Valerie said that she put Daphne up on the couch yesterday for a nap and she crawled right over to her son, who was sleeping there as well, and they were nose to nose! Thanks so much to Debbi who highlighted this family for me! Have a great night!
