They Make Great Therapy Dogs

Bostons might be small in stature, but they're big on being best friends. For more 

than 100 years they've been bred to enjoy the company of people, making them 

ideal for animal-assisted work where their sole job is to put a smile on patients' 

faces in nursing homes, hospitals and other health care facilities.

A handful of national organizations, including Therapy Dogs International and 

Bright and Beautiful Therapy Dogs help train and register dog-handler teams, 

as well as oversee volunteer programs throughout the country.

Getting started usually requires some basic training on both ends of the leash.  

Becoming a registered Pet Partner team with Delta Society, for example, entails 

completing an eight- or 12-hour training workshop or an at-home study course. 

Handlers learn how to prepare for a visit, interact with clients and prevent disease 

transmission from animals to people. They also undergo a skills and aptitude 

test with their dog, given by a local evaluator.

Ha-Na crosses the Rainbow Bridge

Hi Everyone. Former foster Ha-Na crossed the Rainbow Bridge yesterday. She had a little over 4 years in her forever home filled with love and treats and she passed peacefully. I've attached a pic of her in happier and healthier times.

We are so sorry for your loss but we are so thankful you gave her a wonderful loving home for the last 4 years. She passed being loved and happy and now she is running free. Thank you for loving her and sharing.

Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Dog Treats

Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Dog Treat Recipe

Makes 30-40 cookies
Ingredients:
2 3/4 cups whole wheat flour
2 eggs
1 cup canned pumpkin
4 tablespoons peanut butter
1/2 tablespoon honey
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2. Combine flour, eggs, pumpkin, peanut butter, honey, and cinnamon in a bowl. If needed, add water, but the dough needs to be dry and stiff.
3. Roll dough into a 1/4-inch-thickness and cut with cookie cutter.
4. Bake for 30 minutes and let cool on racks.

They're Versatile Athletes

The brainy Boston terrier is able to hold his own in the highly competitive world 

of canine sports. Their innate desire to please people is a big part of the breed's 

ability to quickly learn and excel in a variety of performance events. Here a just 

a few of the sports where you'll find the Boston competing -- and winning!

- Flyball is a lightning-quick relay race where two dogs zoom down a 51-foot 

(15.54-meter) course, jumping over hurdles, to reach a box that spits out a 

tennis ball. The dogs must catch the ball then run back down the course to 

the finish line where their teammates are waiting for their turn to go. The first 

team with all four dogs to finish without making any mistakes wins the heat.                                 

- Agility is another action-packed game, in which dogs running at top speeds 

are directed by their owners to jump hurdles, scale ramps, burst through tunnels, 

traverse a see-saw and weave through a line of poles. The dog with the least 

amount of errors and fastest time wins.

- Obedience events are where dogs perform a series of exercises ranging from 

following basic commands, like sit, stay and down, to more advanced verbal 

commands and hand signals. Dogs are judged on how closely they match a 

perfect performance.

Pugsley is Adopted

Congratulations to Pugsley, who has been adopted by Christopher Ryan.  After living for a long time in a shelter, Pugsley will now have his forever after happy ending.

Many thanks to Strausie Stephens, for fostering him and for opening up her heart and home to this baby in need. We are so happy to hear that he finally is living the life he deserves.  And special thanks to Jerrilyn Walter for coordinating this.

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to tell you Pugsely was adopted!  He went home with a very nice gentleman and his teensy 2-year-old BT Millie. I'm so happy he has a forever home and a forever friend. If they can somehow bottle his energy, cars will no longer run on fossil fuels!  Thanks to everyone for getting him out of the shelter and helping me find his family.

Foster Patsy Update

.....She has been off the antibiotics for two weeks now and the vet wants to re-check her kidney functions; if there is something wrong with her kidney function, the vet said it can be managed through diet... but we'll know more after Patsy's test ! Thank you everyone for your positive thoughts!!!

Nikki lives on in all the fosters that she helped to find their forever homes and in all of our hearts.

All of us at NEBTR want to send Janet Hassell and her family our condolences over the passing of Nikki yesterday. I know that losing Nikki was a terrible loss for you and that Nikki wasn't just a pet, she was a big part of your life. Every time I saw you on facebook Nikki was featured in photos on your page. Special dogs are rare but you were fortunate to find her, and Nikki was lucky to have you as her loving owner. You turned a backyard breeder dog, abused and mistreated, into a loved family member. And countless Boston Terriers of NEBTR have you to thank as well.

Janet writes, “ My sweet Nikki was a great dog. She accepted all of my fosters and treated them like her own. Nikki had DM and lost total control of her back legs. She was put to sleep on 10/29/13. Run free now Nikki, They broke your body but not your spirit. We loved you and will miss you deeply.”

Poor foster Butch had a run of bad luck.  He lost an eye to glaucoma, and his owner was unable to keep him due to health reasons.

But now Butch is in the loving care of Foster Mom Melanie Poggi-Baker and she reports that he is a very loving boy who deserves a forever home of his own.

5 Historical Facts about Boston Terriers - Fact # 1

Some Boast a Haggerty Spot

A circle of dark hair on top of the Boston's head (smack dab in the middle) is 

known as a Haggerty dot, spot or star, depending on who you ask. We just call 

it cute! Dogs with this special marking are descendents of one of the original 

lines of Boston terriers owned by the Haggerty family in the early 1900s, 

according to the Boston Terrier Club of America. Highly respected Boston 

terrier breeder and judge Vincent Perry called this mark "the kiss of God" 

and considered it a lovely addition to a dog's perfect markings.

Coat colors and markings are a big deal in purebred circles. Each club's 

written standard details what's acceptable and what's not. For example, 

the Boston terrier's ultra-short coat is only permissible in three colors -- 

brindle, black or seal, which appears black but when viewed in bright light 

has a red hue. These colors are then complemented by a splash of white 

on the muzzle, chest and between the eyes. It's also OK if the back lower 

legs and front legs (in full or part) are white.
