Mami Goes to the Rainbow Bride

Mami, the little girl who was so lovingly fostered by Tammy Trivelpiece, has gone to the rainbow bridge.  What a wonderful gift to be able to help a dog in need. Thank you for helping Mami and making her happy.

Tammy writes, "Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers! Mami was indeed a special little dog. We foster for a reason! To give every dog a second chance or just to give them dignity before they move on to the rainbow bridge. It isn't easy...never ever easy losing a pet even if it is just a foster. We had Mami over a year! We thought her cancer would have gotten the best of her way before that, but she thrived, and gained weight. We loved her, spoiled her and gave her her own little special place to spend what time she did have without the other dogs bothering her. People always ask me, "how do you do it?" I reply, "BECAUSE they need me" I love all my dogs. even every foster that has come through our door in the past 10 years. I wouldn't change a thing for the world!"

Tammy adds,  "Here is a poem I wrote the day we helped Mami to the rainbow Bridge. As she was laying in John;s arms and I was petting her softly, I pulled out a piece of paper and jotted down a few words I know that Mami was thinking. I put the paper away deep in my purse, but as I was cleaning it out to get it ready for vacation, I came across it.

Don't cry for me, For I am loved. Place me in your hearts for that is where I always be.
 I came to you thin, frail and broken. You gave me love and food.
I finally knew what "living" was all about!
I may have been blind and hard of hearing, but you gave me internal sight and soothing words that I will forever treasure.
You saved me from the unthinkable, I gave you my uncondtional love.
Don't grieve for me, for I am whole again. You are my special Human and I will always watch over you. Thank you for loving me. Thank you for your kindness.
I will be waiting to see you at the Bridge.

Sorry if I made you cry... but I just want you all to know that Fostering Mami has given my family a new meaning of the word. We can foster dogs our whole lives....but it is that end look of gratitude that you see that makes this job the most valuable job on earth. Run free Mami! Run Free

Tori's Surgery

Tori's spay was extremely difficult because her uterus was ADHERED to her bladder and had to be separated (from so many pregnancies).  She was under for a long time so Dr Silverman decided to forgo the teeth cleaning so as not to prolong the anesthesia.

Said it went fine, bladder is in tact.

It's a) a miracle she got rescued when she did, another pregnancy would probably have been lethal and this vet is really great.

Poor girlie. I promise to give her lots of TLC tonight (I made her some organic chicken breast last night).

Update on Teddy

Teddy is just fine. Now that he has settled in, he is getting a bit bossy. He let's us know when he is ready to go out, or getting hungry, etc. He is getting along with the other dogs very well. He lays down and sleeps next to my female pointer.

Fred Thank you for all you and your dog family are doing for Teddy. It's just what we prayed for, Dr Fred.

"Big Archie" is starting to settle in here at the Hess house and of course I'm in love already. My husband graciously agreed to foster him... not bad considering it started out last Friday as, "I'm just going to get him out of the shelter so he doesn't have to stay another night! I promise I won't want to foster him!" My husband thinks we should name him Elmer since he's stuck to me like glue.

He did have a seizure Friday night after I got him home. I'm sure all of the stress, missed medications and vaccinations brought it on. I spoke with his former vet and they were actively working to get his seizures under control. She recommended upping his phenobarbital dose. He has gained weight since she last saw him, the shelter had him at 57lbs! She did say his seizure meds give him the munchies, which might explain his 57lbs. His prognosis is very good if they can get his phenobarbital levels where they need to be but he will require a lifetime of medication.

He is finally eating and his stomach has settled down. He is nothing but 57lbs. of pure sweetness. He is the perfect little gentleman. He walks nice on a leash, sits, and shakes paw on command. He is getting along great with my crazy two and he's wonderful with my two sons ages 6 and 9. He's charming my neighbors and the school bus driver.

Update on Dozer

Dozer is doing well with Robin May Ruggie.  Check out these adorable photos. 

He still has issues with other dogs. Robin says that if he didn't have that problem, he'd be PERFECT.  She adds, "But, as we all know, rescues are rarely perfect. He is sooooo sweet."

Update on Molly

Molly is doing wonderfully and is not favoring either leg anymore. She hops and jumps and rolls around on her back in the grass like a frisky puppy when she goes outside-she is a new little woman!

I know it's ridiculous, but we got her a doggie stroller with a mesh screen so she can go to craft fairs and other outdoor functions where she can see the people she loves but be safe in case another dog arrives on the scene-will let you know how that works. My husband can't believe I got it but he pampers her just as much as I do, so he's full of it. It's hard to say who loves her the most-she is just the perfect angel. The kids are still great with her and take her on lots of walks without complaint. I think it was good to wait until they were a little older to get her. We all like cuddling with her on the couch.

Still no accidents; she still doesn't like to go out in the rain, but thunderstorms don't really bother her anymore. She stays up with me at night while I putter around the house and knows when it's time for bed-she trots in front of me and stands at the bed to wait for me to put her up. Then she curls up at the foot and sleeps through the night with us. On weekends if I sleep in, she will, too!

Thanks again for everything-it's great to know we made the best decision for her health -she's all set for a nice long life, knock on wood!

Update on Magoo and Trigger

Yesterday was a sad day for us; we took Polly to the vet and we decided the time had come to let her go.  We thought we would have to do it last Nov or Dec, but with some meds she was able to make it until June.  Yesterday she started having respiratory distress; with her other problems we decided along with our Vet. that it was time to allow her to go.   She had been having a lot of pain in her spine that didn’t completely go away with meds, and she was quick to snap at us if we touched her back.  She was age 13 on Dec. 26.  We already miss her terribly, and I think Magoo and Trigger realize she’s not coming back home.

Trigger is still doing great!  He’s pretty friendly with most people now and with us, of course.  He loves to chase a ball outside.  Magoo is  on a couple of meds (Denamarin & Tramadol—he only takes them with cream cheese!), one of which helps with the arthritis.  So he still gets around, but slowly.  He doesn’t go up and down stairs anymore, and he doesn’t walk around very much when out in the back yard.  But his appetite is very good as long as we include a little canned dog food with the dry.  He sleeps good, except he often wakes up around 4 or 5 a.m. and barks until we feed him.  He also barks when it’s time for his med (every 8 hrs)!  He’s actually a pretty smart little doggie.

Magoo has a little round soft bed in my computer room; right now he’s sprawled out, half in it and half out, but I guess he’s comfty Smile  Trigger, of course, is lying right next to me.  That’s where he usually is!

Note: Pat Stone, who adopted Magoo and Trigger from us about 3 or 4 years ago. Magoo has apparently decided he's sticking around to live the good life as long as possible. We thought he was at least 10 when she adopted him.
