Update on Brady

In some ways, I can't believe "the new dog" has been with us for an entire year, but I can hardly remember what our family was like without Brady. He has so many incredibly sweet and charming qualities. He is the best snuggler I have ever met. He is so quick to roll over and offer you his belly to pet. He gives the sweetest little kisses, even though he's a large BT (40 pounds these days!). He is the perfect companion for our "problem dog," little Molly, who can be a little difficult and not a fan of other dogs since her puppy mill momma days. Brady knows to let Molly snuggle when she wants to and even kisses her all over her face. When Molly gives the signal, Brady backs off.

I just cannot find enough good words to describe Brady.... loyal, sweet, fun, patient, excitable, CUTE. The list just goes on and on. We are so blessed to have him as part of our family and are eternally grateful to NEBTR and the McFadden's for helping bring him into our lives.

Foster Rosie

Hi! my name is Rosie and I am estimated to be around 3 years old!

I love my name! My Foster sister gave me that name. See, I never had a name. I lived in a wire cage all my life and was used to produce puppies. Now I am free and loving every minute of it! My foster mom says I am very smart. I go potty outside, watch all my foster fur brothers and sisters do their thing so I do it too. I do sleep in a comfy crate, and I love to be held by my foster family. Because I am a puppy mill dog, I do need some extra care and love. Sometimes I do not understand things and get very scared. But, I am willing to watch and learn. I love dogs and people and just an all around great girl. I am ready to be the best pet I can be! I am eager and ready to please!!!


Her foster mom Tammy Trivelpiece says, "What a dog! I have never quite had a mill dog like Rosie. She is a nut! Loves ice cubes! its like watching 'boston Hockey'. She will bat one around for a long time before trying to eat it. She loves rope toys, and paper towel rolls. She is a quick learner and adapts to her surroundings without much anxiety." Tammy just loves Rosie to pieces!

Mambo Goes to His Forever Home

Mambo wrote the following information about himself when he was looking for a forever home:

"Hey this is me Mambo. I've been doing great in foster care and guess what, I've learned how to get along with other dogs and I am completely house trained. As you know I came from a shelter and I was very thin and had a dull coat. Now I'm just so handsome and my coat is beautiful. I live with my foster mom Linda who boards dogs. She taught me how to get along and play nice with poodles and big labs and rotties. I sleep in a bed with my brother and sister Bostons. I'm so special that a photographer who adopted a foster from the group took a video of me and I'm on Youtube. My name is Mambo for a reason. I know how to do the Mambo and the video is great so you have to check it out. I really need a family to adopt me. I know I have an ulcerated eye that is not pretty but it don't bother me so don't let it bother you. I still have another good eye. I promise I'll shower you with kisses and I even know how to sit for a treat. I'm a proud good boy and a perfect Boston Terrier."

David Sachs and his daughter Allison saw the photo and bio by Mambo, and the rest is history. As his foster mom Linda writes,

"David Sachs, and his daughter Allison came to see Mambo today. What nice people. I spoke with David over the phone last night for a good hour and his application was too good to be true.

Mambo showered them with kisses and I showed them how Mambo rides a boogie board in the pool. Their dog Bindi (a beagle/italian greyhound mix) was a doll and played nicely with my dogs.

Diane Laundri was also here which was good for me. She was the one who pulled him from the shelter and first fostered him. After about an hour, David said he would love to adopt Mambo and when can I deliver him (I always deliver my fosters and had told him so). Diane and I
exchanged a glance and she whispered let him take him now. I had typed the adoption agreement & addendum last night after I spoke to David on the phone and secretly knew I may let him take Mambo if he wanted to.

Walking out front was hard. Diane couldn't come with me and my friend Joanne wouldn't even say goodbye to Mambo. Mambo and Bindi sat with Allison in the back and I smiled when he showered her with kisses again. After they left although the tears rolled down my cheeks, I knew I did the right thing. It wasn't about the 1.5 hour trip I would have to take to deliver him, it was about the perfect family who picked Mambo despite his ulcerated eye. They couldn't believe anyone would be afraid of it or think it was ugly.

Mambo definitely hit the jackpot. I know he totally hit the jackpot, I spoke to Karin Sachs for over an hour tonight and she is totally in love!!! Hurray for happy endings. Mambo is so mint wonderful they are going to love him and spoil him. Couldn't have happened to a better family and a better DOG!!! Mambo is doing well and will of course sleep with them tonight. It doesn't get better than that. I miss my baby boy and its always hard making one less bowl during feeding time but I'm so pleased with this adoption. I call it rags to riches!!!

Joyjoy Goes to Her Forever Home

Hey everyone, our foster Joyjoy, was adopted out to Michelle Swangler and Tom Donovan this evening (thank you Sandee for doing their home visit!) Joy was a shelter dog, originally a mill mama, from the York SPCA in June and we had the pleasure of fostering this little gem of a girl for almost 2 months. I drove her up to Michelle and Tom and it was love at first sight. They were thrilled with her. First words out of Michelle's mouth were how beautiful she is and soft her coat is : ) (Yeah for good food, exercise, neem oil shampoo and some love and care!)

Sigh, it was a sad good bye but I am very confident this is a fabulous home for the Joyjoy. I forgot my camera in the car (of course.) But Michelle has already emailed me and let me know Joy has spent the evening on the couch with them : )

Thanks to all who had a hand in her adoption from the application process, to placement and home visit help! I love this group of amazing volunteers!

Update on Spikey/Tazzy

Thank you for the two year anniversary card for Spikey (now named Taz Manster) We started out a little rough when I first got Tazzy as he is deaf and was very aggressive if you reached towards him. Within 3 months Tazzy had learned sign language. The aggression issues took almost a year longer with lots of patience and "time outs" as I do not hit animals. Two years later Tazzy has become my huggie bug. I still have to watch him if strangers approach but he will make friends with other people if they let him come to them. I have attached a couple pictures of Tazzy so you can see how he is now. He is my love and is in his forever home.

New Foster Daisy May

Daisy May is a shy little thing. She is a country girl from a very rural puppymill. She isn't house broken but is very comfortable with people and is great with my dogs. She is busy exploring the house and now is curled up on a pillow just watching things. Will post other pics and an update in a couple of days. She is adorable, six years old, petite and very pretty.

Update on Lola

Hello,

Thank you for the postcard celebrating our 2 year adoption anniversary of Lola. She fits perfectly into our family. We cannot imagine life without her. We recently had a baby, Hannah, who is 4 months old now. Hannah loves to watch Lola play. Whenever Lola gets near, Hannah gets a huge smile! Lola loves to sniff and lick her.

Shortly after we adopted Lola we took her to puppy training classes and she did great. She is such a smart dog. At 4 1/2 she still loves to play as if she were a puppy. I don't think she'd make a good guard dog b/c anyone that comes in the house she jumps up to lick their face. She can even reach my husband's face (he is 6ft 5).

We are thrilled to have Lola in our lives Thank you for what you do.

Update on Willow

It's hard to believe that its almost been two years since we first met our dear Willow.She has become such a beloved member of our family that it feels like she always been with us. She is a loving little girl who is great with people. She is excellent with our young nieces (3 and 6) who on one visit found Willow's doggie bed blanket and kept trying to tuck her in. Willow just sighed and settled down for a afternoon nap after the littlest one gave her a kiss on the head.

She has been wonderful company for my 87 yr old mother who lives with me. Willow will follow her room to room and be content just to know she's there. I'm pretty sure she's also managed to get some extra afternoon cheese treats before I get home from work.

Willow has cancer. She has had multiple surgeries but seems to be doing well so far. It may shorten her time with us but we are committed to giving her the best possible life with lots and lots of love! She's had several very bad teeth pulled. It made a huge different in her appetite. It's a big difference from the thin little waif we first met. Now she's filled out and looks good. Her hearing has been steadily getting worse (I think she had selective hearing anyway. Ha!) She is almost completely deaf now but we've been working on sign language with her for awhile so that she will still be able to understand us when her hearing is finally gone. Despite being almost deaf she still is quite a talker. She has quite an expressive vocabulary. She has a particularly enchanting almost chuckle when she is being rubbed.

She still enjoys a jaunt around the neighborhood and is still fearful of some other dogs particularly large black ones. If only she could tell us of her past. She has been better with being around other small dogs particularly a couple of my sister's cairn terriers.

Willow has never learned to play. The beloved stuffed frog that Tiffany, her NEBTR Foster, Mom gave her still holds a special place in her bed. She no longer sucks on it constantly for reassurance. She knows now that this is her forever home. Willow, my mother and myself want to thank everyone at NEBTR for the care that you give to all the rescues like Willow and for bringing families like ours together!

Frankie Goes to His Forever Home

My Frankie was adopted today by Brian Karp & Amanda Ullman. He's on his way to the Big Apple (Manhattan). I love this couple very much and most important, their female BT Dakota and Frankie love each other.

Amanda is the daughter of Brian & Chris Ullman who adopted my Sadie a few years ago so I already knew her. Since he came from a shelter and I didn't know his name, I named him Frankie. Amanda wants to name him Fenway. She'll post pictures soon.

It's hard for me to comprehend how just a couple of weeks ago this boy had pneumonia and now is healthy and happy. I was so worried he would die... I owe my vet a big thank you note for this one.

Here Come the BT Cruisers!

The BT Cruisers will be setting up and sponsoring an event on August 13. They are setting up and running the whole thing with all proceeds going to NEBR. You may remember that a few of us here in Rochester decided a couple of years ago to form a playgroup to socialize our Bostons. We then started taking part in various fundraisers for animal shelters and came up with a team name of BT Cruisers. We now have regular get togethers and take part in at least three different fundraisers routinely with more on the schedule this year. It is pretty impressive to see us walking with our BT's. One fundraiser we had 25 BT's walking with their owners! We have high hopes for our fund raisers and hope that some of our NEBTR members would be willing to travel a little and join us.

Bailey Goes to Her Forever Home

Bailey was adopted by a nice older local couple. I took her to our local custard stand with an "adopt me" bandana on and the inquired about her since they recently lost their boston to old age. I just spoke to them this evening for their 24 hour check up and they said she is doing great. She is eating good, knows where to go for treats after going potty, and cuddles with them on the couch. Thank you to everybody who has helped me and Bailey on getting her to her forever home!

New Foster Pinky

Pinky is an owner surrender. The woman who had her had a fenced yard that Pinky dug out of a few times. You should have seen all the stuff she came with ! She is on the bigger side, close to 25 lbs. and is busy checking things out. She's a sweet girl and should make someone a great pet.

Loree will be her foster mom and give her lots of love.

Nina Goes to Her Forever Home

Saturday Nina was adopted by the Bromley Family. Nina was the 10 pound girl that was pulled from a puppy mill in Lancaster County, PA in April. She was 6 years old and kept outside in a rabbit hutch all year round. They are a wonderful family and we all liked them very much. This is the happy ending that Nina so deserves.

Update on Ruby

Thought you might enjoy seeing what Ruby found on the lawn out front! A seagull must have dropped it & of course SHE picked it up! She was very proud of herself! Hope you are well...She is just WONDERFUL! Thank you for sending her to us!!! Judy

Brutus Goes to His Forever Home

I just wanted to share the GREAT news that Brutus was adopted last Sunday, 7/17.  He was adopted by a couple and their daughter in my town - a really great family, and they are just loving him to pieces. Here is what his new dad wrote me this morning:

"Brutus is doing well, doing what dogs do, he is very very good. He seems pretty happy so far. I can't see why someone would return this dog. He is so easy going!"

This is such a relief for me, and I'm SO happy for Brutus - after almost a year in and out of different shelters at the age of 10, he finally has a family to love him! Also, my cats are again enjoying the peace and quiet in the house and hanging around the living room! LOL

Goober Goes to His Forever Home

My Oobie Goobie Gooberson was adopted last Thursday. He went to live with Kelley Simmons and her daughter in Delaware.

For those that dont remember, Goober was on the Euth list at the SPCA in New York. His owners dropped him there to be put to sleep because he was "too sick". Tara B worked fast to get him pulled before it was too late and he was on his way to us in PA. When he arrived he was missing most of his hair. We suspected mange but figured out over time that it was allergies that had been neglected for a very long time.

Goober spent the next few months trying new foods and new meds. His hair started to grow back rapidly. He went from not moving at all because of how uncomfortable he was, to chugging his little butt all over the house and demanding walks. He is a complete lovebug and had become quite the mommas boy. He also became quite famous on our facebook page, people actually emailed Sheryl asking for more updates. He is our little celebrity.

While many thought he would be my first failed foster ;) I stuck to the thought that we would only adopt him out if someone better than us came along, figured I was pretty safe there! Well, I thought wrong. The Simmons specifically wanted Goober, they were well versed in his allergy issues and any problems he could develop down the road, and they had a quiet home for him to spend his senior days in. I couldn't compete.

Goober has been doing great in his new home. They love him to death. He has been given the royal spa treatment and they play with him constantly. They have already taught him "sit" and are working on "down".

I couldn't have asked for anything better for my little grumbly old man.

2 Years!
Today is a big and special day in our house.  7/18 marks the 2 year anniversary of our adoption of Buster & Lady!

I can't believe we've had them with us for 2 years already.  They are more than comfortable here with us, and are having a blast.  They love Judith and often use her as a salt lick, which is really ironic because the kid's tasting super salty right now with the heat (people with CF lose salt very quickly, especially through sweat).  Both dogs are patient with her exploration of them, especially Lady because Judith is favoring her right now during her CPT time - she likes to reach out and touch her jowls and neck, and feel her soft fur.  Buster's not too fond of Judith when she gets super loud because she disturbs his beauty, or "boo"ty sleep (see what I did there?) as I like to call it!  Lady still follows me to the nursery whenever I change Judith's diaper (Buster follows most of the time too, but if he's sleeping under his blankets he won't follow) to make sure that everything is fine.  Lunchtime is their new favorite time of day, because they know they'll get to clean up and finish whatever solid is left in Judith's bowl.

Most of you don't know their story, so I would like to share it with you!

A little more than 2 years ago, John & I decided that we wanted to get a dog.  We were in the middle of TTC, and still having a rough time with it.  The economy was stinking, and I couldn't find temp work to fill in the gaps - things were pretty darn lonely here, so we decided since having a baby more than likely wasn't in the very near future, we would get a dog.  The timing was perfect because I was home and would be able to train a puppy if necessary.

We had to decide on what type of dog to get.  John grew up with boxers, I grew up with terriers (an airedale when I was a baby, and a westie through my school and college years).  We didn't want anything too big because we didn't have the space, so a boxer was eliminated from the list.  We thought about a westie, but I didn't think it was fair to bring a westie to a home where there wasn't ample yard space to run around in.  We talked, and decided that we wanted either a Boston or a Frenchie.  We had fallen in love with a church member's Bostons, so we settled on a Boston.

We thought about a puppy, but that really wasn't for us at the time.  Rescue suited us much better.  I began looking into rescues, and I stumbled across the Northeast Boston Terrier Rescue.  We saw some of their fosters on Petfinder, and knew we had to fill out the adoption application.  We had a phone interview, and a couple days later we got another phone call: they wanted to know if we would be willing to take 2 dogs.  I remember John hesitated, and after a bit of discussion we said yes.

During this time, Buster & Lady were surrendered to a shelter.  They were and are incredibly bonded, and the shelter knew they had to be placed together.  If my memory serves me correctly, the shelter knew that this may not be possible, so they contacted the rescue to see if they could help.  Enter Buster & Lady's wonderful foster family - they got them into the rescue through agreeing to foster them!

We were able to talk to Buster & Lady's foster mommy over the phone, and she told us all about them.  We knew that Buster has a sensitive personality, and he was very sad in the shelter.  We also learned that Lady is very dominant and protective of Buster (oh, and we also found out that she's ball crazy).  We began making arrangements to pick the 2 of them up once everyone got word that our home inspection went well.  The date was set, and we began preparing for our new additions!

July 19 rolled around, and John & I waited anxiously in a parking lot in New Jersey.  Before we knew it, Buster, Lady, their foster mommy, and 1 foster sister were rolling into the lot!  Buster wasn't seen right away, but Lady was - she was in the driver's seat, on her foster mommy's lap!  Buster was very unsure about what was happening, and seemed very sad overall.  Lady definitely didn't care - she greeted us, and jumped into the back of the car pretty quickly, ready to head off to her next adventure.  We spent some time together, going over instructions for their feedings and learning how to care for Lady's eye.  John & I signed the official adoption papers, and were able to leave with our new furbabies!  We packed them into the car and headed home.

Lady was comfortable with us after about 36 hours - the proof was waking up the second day they were here and finding her in the bed (surprise!).  Buster took a bit longer to settle in, but he was up on the bed too the night after Lady decided to take the plunge.  Overall, though, it took them about 3 months to really feel comfortable and begin to realize they wouldn't be moved suddenly again.  The first couple of times they had to stay with my parents overnight for whatever reason were tricky, and once Buster realized he was coming home, he was fine (we're back to square one with that though after they had to spend a week with my parents while I was hospitalized from the preeclampsia and Judith's birth).

Buster & Lady, happy 2 years in your forever home!  We can't wait for many, many more great years to come!

Happy Gotcha Day Lenny!

As we begin this summer, it brings memories of last summer and Lenny’s arrival at our house.  It had been nine months since we lost our Boston Terrier Cookie and we decided we needed another Boston in our home. So we filled out the NEBTR paper work, had an interview, then a home visit, and waited.

At the end of June, we were so excited to get a call from Carolyn at Kamp Kanine. Carolyn said she thought she had “the” dog for us. His name was Leonard; he had a very rough first year with the family who surrendered him and still had difficulty with new people.

We went to Carolyn’s to meet Leonard aka Lenny and Len (his names fit him well). He wasn’t too interested in us, but we fell in love with him right away. To make him more comfortable with us, we paid him a second visit and on our third visit on July 17th we brought him home.

It took Lenny a little while to settle into our house and find his favorite spots; most having to do with being able to look outside and/ or sleeping. But the backyard has become his absolute favorite place. When he is outside Lenny loves to chase bugs, stalk squirrels, birds, and rabbits, sit in the sun and shade, play catch, watch/bark at people as they pass by the house, and play with Tucker. Tucker is a one year old Shiatsu who lives next door and is Lenny’s best friend. They began their friendship by running back and forth together on each side of the fence between our yards. Now they have several play dates each day and Lenny is friends with Tucker’s entire family.

Lenny loves to go for rides in the car, any kind of treat, to learn new things, play ball, go the park, go on walks, get up early in the summer (ugh!), play in the snow (but he won’t go out without his favorite jacket or sweater), and snuggle. Every time one of us comes in the front door (whether we are gone for 2 minutes or 2 hours) we get the best greetings from him.  He makes us smile each and every day!

We have been working with Elisa (from Big Tail Waggin), a wonderful trainer, to help Lenny get over his aggressive fear of strangers. Even though he still has difficulty, he is so much less apprehensive and improves daily! Once Lenny knows you, you are his friend forever.

On this Lenny’s Gotcha date, we wanted to thank you all at NEBTR for all you do that brought Lenny into our lives and hearts.

New Fosters Ozzy and and His Seeing Eye Boston Rocky

Harry is a 8 year old blind Norwich Terrier mix. He's amazingly sweet, and a bit rambuncious for a blind dog. Ozzy, the overweight Boston, is also 8 years old. The boys have grown up together and were surrendered to a Philadelphia shelter because their owner lost his home. It was heart breaking to see this grown man in tears, giving up his best friends. The shelter told the owner that it would do its best to keep them together, but couldn't make any guarantees. It seems that Harry is quite dependent on Ozzy. He uses him to 'see'.

NEBTR stepped in and since this is a heartbreaking story was determined to keep these boys together since they have lost everything else.

On a busy holiday weekend, a group of dedicated volunteers arranged for a transport of the boys to their foster home in upstate New York. Here are some pictures of that transport.

New Foster Astro

Harvey is a SUPER sweetheart and is going to make a family with kids/other dogs/ cats a fabulous dog.

He is good in the kennel- goes very willingly, and quiet, no accident in kennel.
He has a silly bark...much higher pitch then my boston Ginny.
He is very energetic and likes to play.
He is very attached to me already.
When I nurse the baby in bed he lays down on the bed at my feet.
He has quickly learned the rules of the house...at first he was all over the furniture....but after a few AGHT noises he has not gotten on the furniture in a few hours.
He appears to be mostly house trained.
Willing to take his meds in a piece of cheese.
He has a healthy appetite.
Walked on a leash well next to the stroller.
Afraid of loud noises.
Interested in cats but not obsessive, when the cats swat he runs (they are declawed so no ouchies)
